In this Appalachian version of "The Kind and the Unkind Girls," two sisters--Bess and Tess--are sent by their mother to draw water from the Well-at-the-End-of-the-World. Along the way they meet a bear, a mountain lion, a wild boar, and three little foxes. When Bess greets them with courtesy and respect, the foxes reward her kindness. Tess, greedy for her own bounty, can't be bothered with manners; she bonks the animals with her bucket, kicks them with her boots, and slings the little foxes to the ground. In the end, both sisters get their just deserts. With a storyteller's cadence, Margaret Read MacDonald captures the tale's mountain rhythms, homespun wisdom, and timeless truth. Kitty Harvill's vibrant illustrations, rendered in watercolor and cut-paper collage, capture the interplay and mountain terrain that has shaped this unique version of a universal tale.

“Gilr you spoke kindly to me .“ I like this quote because it shows that when you are kind to someone they will be kind back.

I liked this book but I felt like it was a little redundant. The story is predictable in how it ends which is good for younger elementary students.

The Wishing Foxes by Margaret Read MacDonald. Folktale. The moral of this story is that you should treat others how you would want to be treated. In the story, there are two sisters one who is kind and one who is not. The kind sister gets 3 special wishes and the other gets three bad wishes.

“So after that, Bess went for water and Tess stayed home until she learned how to treat folks right. Fact is, if you are kind... kindness just comes right back to you.“

This is a great story to read when talking about life lessons. The moral of the story is to always be kind and grateful because what goes around comes around so it is always important to be kind.

The Wishing Foxes is a folktale written by Margaret Read MacDonald and published in 2017. Bess is tasked with bringing water from the Well-at-the-End-of-the-World. Along the trip, she encounters three foxes, a bear, a mountain lion, and a wild boar. She even washes the foxes' cheeks at their request. They reward her in return. Tess, her irritable sister, is dispatched, and when she acts rudely, the outcome is completely different.

The message of this story is a good one. Treat people how you would like to be treated. I am not a huge fan of the illustrations and don‘t know if I would include this in my classroom.

In this story, there are two sisters. One is kind and caring and one is harsh and grumpy. When Bess travels to the well at the end of the world, she speaks kindly to each animal she meets. Due to her kindness and respect, three foxes bestow three gifts upon her. Bess returns home and her mother sends Tess to the well. However, Tess is rude to all she meets. She also receives "gifts" from the 3 foxes; however, her gifts are not gifts you would want

This book would be great to read to kids when they are forgetting about being respectful to one another or anyone else. It is a clear theme of “treat others how you want to be treated“ there are also lots of karma themes.

Pickpick

Bess and Tess are sisters. Bess has always been really nice to everyone and her sister Tess is the opposite, very rude and irritable to everyone! They take an adventure to retrieve different objects for back home. Bess gets to the end and the creatures she meets along the way are blown away by how nice she is that they grant her amazing powers. The opposite goes for her sister Tess.

The message of this book stood out to me. I thought it was a great lesson of always being kind to others, and if you are kind then you will often be rewarded with kindness in return.

Bess was the kind sister and Tess was the sister that treated others poorly. Bess went to go get water from the well and comes across the bear, because she was kind the bear let her go. The same encounter happened with a mountain lion, boar, and foxes. The foxes make wishes for Bess. When Tess went, all of the animals tried to jump on her and she had to run away. The foxes wished I‘ll things upon her.

Traditional literature. This book is okay, not my favorite but still has a great story behind it.

I liked how the foxes wished good things for Bess, but I thought it was funny when they wished for corn to come out of Tesses nose.

This book is about two sisters one who is kind and one who is mean. Throughout the book we see the kind sister get treated back with kindness and the mean sister get paid back with mean things. Would be a good book to show that being kind is better than being mean.
