Looking for the Hidden Folk
Looking for the Hidden Folk: How Iceland's Elves Can Save the Earth | Nancy Marie Brown
2 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
In exploring how Icelanders interact with natureand their idea that elves live among usNancy Marie Brown shows us how altering our perceptions of the environment can be a crucial first step toward saving it. Icelanders believe in elves. Why does that make you laugh?, asks Nancy Marie Brown in this wonderfully quirky exploration of our interaction with nature. Looking for answers in history, science, religion, and artfrom ancient times to todayBrown finds that each discipline defines what is real and unreal, natural and supernatural, demonstrated and theoretical, alive and inert. Each has its own way of perceiving and valuing the world around us. And each discipline can be defined, in the Icelandic perception, by its own sort of elf. Illuminated by her own encounters with Icelands Otherworldin ancient lava fields, on a holy mountain, beside a glacier or an erupting volcano, crossing the cold desert at the islands heart on horsebackLooking for the Hidden Folk offers an intimate conversation about how we look at and find value in nature. It reveals how the words we use and the stories we tell shape the world we see. It argues that our beliefs about the Earth will preserveor destroy it. Scientists name our time the Anthropocene: the Human Age. Climate change will lead to the mass extinction of numerous animal species unless we humans change our course. Iceland suggests a different way of thinking about the Earth, one that offers hope. Icelanders believe in elves and you should, too.

This book was interesting but not at all what I was thinking it would be. I thought it might discuss how Nordic traditions are valuable in climate change actions. In a way, it was. The book isn‘t so much about elves, but about what the land means to humans living within it. How much value do we place in it? When we see it as sacred, we have more respect for it. If we care for it, it will care for us. The old pagan and indigenous traditions⬇️

JenniferEgnor have a relationship with the land. Not only are there spirits within it, the land itself is a living thing—as is the water, the sky. Christianity largely stripped these traditions away and punished those who held onto them; it taught to subdue, not to live in harmony with. Where has that gotten us today? Harmful systems of oppression, and a dying planet with a swan song we refuse to acknowledge. This book is mostly memoir, some history, and⬇️ (edited) 5mo
JenniferEgnor a lot of literature references (the Icelandic Sagas, Tolkien). An enjoyable read; I hope to visit Iceland one day to experience its magic before it disappears. (edited) 5mo
