Remainders of the Day
Remainders of the Day: More Diaries from The Bookshop, Wigtown | Shaun Bythell
7 posts | 6 read | 8 to read
The Bookshop in Wigtown is a bookworm's idyll - with thousands of books across nearly a mile of shelves, a real log fire, and Captain, the bookshop cat. You'd think after twenty years, owner Shaun Bythell would be used to the customers by now. Don't get him wrong - there are some good ones among the antiquarian erotica-hunters, die-hard Arthurians, people who confuse bookshops for libraries and the toddlers just looking for a nice cosy corner in which to wee. He's sure there are. There must be some good ones, right? Filled with the pernickety warmth and humour that has touched readers around the world, stuffed with literary treasures, hidden gems and incunabula, Remainders of the Day is Shaun Bythell's latest entry in his bestselling diary series.

If you‘ve read a Shaun Bythell diary, you know what to expect, and this book delivers. Felt melancholy reading about Captain, the bookshop cat, who died this year 💔 (review written February 2023; the diary is from at least five years previous)

Remainders Of The Day was more understated than I expected, quite a cozy read – with brilliant moments of sensational snark. All told, it's a remarkably accurate insight into the life of a used bookseller, and a delightful easy read for this time of year. Just about squeezed this in in 2022. Another great read of life as an independent book shop owner. Loved it

I just love these books, of the curmudgeonly Bythell detailing a year in the life of a bookseller in Wigtown, Scotland. The best bit for me, is that this one chronicles 2016, when yours truly was in the shop! I didn‘t make it into the book, which, based on most of the customers who do, is a really good thing! 😂

LeahBergen Oh God, I live in dread of making it into these books! 😆 1y
vivastory Oh man, can you imagine? 😂 1y

Good. Listened to the audiobook edition of this. Follows on from the other books and follows how the characters are getting on. Interesting take on retail and customer relations. Funny and informative.
