L.A. Requiem
L.A. Requiem | Robert Crais
6 posts | 14 read | 4 to read
The day starts like any other in L.A. The sun burns hot as the Santa Ana winds blow ash from mountain fires to coat the glittering city. But for private investigator Joe Pike, the city will never be the same again. His ex-lover, Karen Garcia, is dead, brutally murdered with a gun shot to the head. Now Karen's powerful father calls on Pike (a former cop) and his partner, Elvis Cole, to keep an eye on the LAPD as they search for his daughter's killer--because in the luminous City of Angels, everyone has secrets, and even the mighty blue have something to hide. But what starts as a little procedural hand-holding turns into a deadly game of cat-and-mouse. For a dark web of conspiracy threatens to destroy Pike and Cole's twelve-year friendship--if not their lives. And L.A. just might be singing their dirge. From the Paperback edition.

A case turns personal when Pike asks Elvis Cole for a favor - an old girlfriend has gone missing but the police won't look for her yet. When she tragically turns up dead, Cole and Pike are told to keep an eye on the police investigation - a task made more difficult by Pike's troubled past with the LAPD.

Pike's backstory was interesting, Cole's self-inflicted romantic woes are annoying and the murderer's motives made no sense. But a fun pastime.

#90sInJuly #day11 #MyHero Joe Pike & Elvis Cole are my heroes. Though in the surface they seem completely different, Cole is a jokester who wears Hawaiian shirts & talks a lot, Pike wears aviator glasses 24/7 sweatshirt with the sleeves cut off & is taciturn to the point of being mute. But both have hearts of gold & will go above and beyond for people who need their help. Pike especially can see straight to the truth of someone & is full of honour.

Cinfhen Sounds like the types of guys u want to keep around 💕 7y

Bk8 in the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike series is my favourite so far. This one gives you a lot of Pikes story, his childhood plus his years as a cop. It's also a love letter to Los Angeles, you can tell just how much Crais loves the city in his writing. A former girlfriend of Pike is found murdered & it starts a series of events that culminate with Pike on the run for murder & Elvis charged with aiding & abetting. A wild ride from start to finish.5⭐️

This is the 8th book in the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike series, and it is by far the best. Crais moves away from the usual wisecracking from Cole and into the relationships, old and new, and the backgrounds of characters and has a fully formed novel of emotional depth. This book would be hard to top.

#LyricalApril #day14 #UnderTheBridge These are two of L.As finest writers. Michael Connollys Harry Bosch series & Robert Crais' Elvis Cole & Joe Pike books are basically love letters to the City of Angels. I've learnt more about Los Angeles reading their stories than I ever learnt in geography. When I first started reading Bosch, I used to have an atlas open at the city so I had an idea of what he was describing. These days it's Google maps.🌉

Cinfhen Two authors I'm not familiar with...that's why I love these daily challenges💟 8y
TrishB Love Bosch 💓 8y
Lizpixie @Cinfhen if you like your detectives tortured & damaged, you'll love Bosch & Elvis is the "comedian hiding his pain" type of PI. Both are brilliant! @TrishB Me too! He was one of the first American crime writers I fell in love with. 8y

TrishB Yep! Have you watched the series? I haven't in case they've ruined him! I'm waiting for a fan to tell me it's good! 8y
Lizpixie I've watched most of the first season, Titus Welliver is perfect as Bosch! There's a few niggles, but overall it's a pretty good adaptation. They really pick up on his love of the city. 8y
Alfoster Agree with @Lizpixie Show is great! Love those flawed detectives! 8y
