Cinema Speculation | Quentin Tarantino
8 posts | 7 read | 4 to read
The long-awaited first work of nonfiction from the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: a deliriously entertaining, wickedly intelligent cinema book as unique and creative as anything by Quentin Tarantino. In addition to being among the most celebrated of contemporary filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino is possibly the most joyously infectious movie lover alive. For years he has touted in interviews his eventual turn to writing books about films. Now, with Cinema Speculation, the time has come, and the results are everything his passionate fansand all movie loverscould have hoped for. Organized around key American films from the 1970s, all of which he first saw as a young moviegoer at the time, this book is as intellectually rigorous and insightful as it is rollicking and entertaining. At once film criticism, film theory, a feat of reporting, and wonderful personal history, it is all written in the singular voice recognizable immediately as QTs and with the rare perspective about cinema possible only from one of the greatest practitioners of the artform ever.

QT‘s not even half as annoying in written form as he is when interviewed. Whatever the literary equivalent of over-enthusiastic babbling is, this isn‘t it. It‘s palatable nerdiness, focused on what makes films interesting to QT. He makes them interesting to me too: Mostly 70s action films - their stars, directors & producers. You have to take what QT says seriously because he‘s a genuinely successful and this sets it above standard movie critique.

Leftcoastzen I was curious about this one. Nice review. 4mo

Imagine you are on a long car trip in a junk car in your twenties with your best friend who happens to be Quentin Tarantino. I loved this book, I love how much he loves movies, he makes me want to love movies. He makes you feel like you need to see these movies. It‘s like you are sitting in a movie trailer on the set in the 70‘s. He describes the screenplays, and how they are different than the actual movie. The actors, directors, a fun read

4/150 I feel my pick should have an * beside it. This is a very interesting look at the movies that Tarantino saw during his formative years, and how they affected his own film making career. Depending on the reader's knowledge or interest in 70s cinema will affect the level of enjoyment. Except for Rolling Thunder, I've seen all the movies discussed in the book, so I found Tarantino's analysis very entertaining. It may differ for others. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

EclecticBookLover My husband got this for me for Christmas and I couldn't stop reading it. I hope we get more writing like this on the future from Tarantino. He's so knowledgeable and has a great writing style. 1y

Tarantino is one of my favorite contemporary directors. I haven‘t loved all his films, but I‘m consistently excited for a new movie from him. QT‘s appreciation for and nerdy scholarship of this era of movies (50s-70s) comes through with his signature irreverent voice. The best part is an interlude explaining the shift in the industry from the 1950s studio system > 60s New Hollywood > 70s movie brat generation. While rated a pick, I gave it 3 ⭐️…..

Kimberlone …because there were chapters on very niche genre films that I had never heard of much less any context for reading about. Those chapters I skimmed and even skipped entire pages. The chapters I engaged with most centered on films I had at least heard of if not actually watched and had interesting things to say about the screenplay, director, or actors. 1y
TheNeverendingTBR What's your favourite one of his? 1y
Kimberlone @TheNeverendingTBR Pulp Fiction is my all time favorite (I‘ve definitely watched it the most of any of his) but I also loved Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Inglorious Basterds for more recent works. 1y
TheNeverendingTBR Inglorious Basterds is my favourite. I couldn't get into Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. 😒 I hear his next one is his last. 1y
Kimberlone @TheNeverendingTBR I‘ve heard the same rumor, but I hope he‘ll pull a Jay-Z/Tom Brady and abandon his retirement plans or un-retire. 1y
