A System So Magnificent It Is Blinding
A System So Magnificent It Is Blinding | Amanda Svensson
3 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
Are we free to create our own destinies or are we just part of a system beyond our control? A joyful family saga about free will, forgiveness, and how we are all interconnected. In October 1989, a set of triplets is born, and it is this moment their father chooses to reveal his affair. Pandemonium ensues. Over two decades later, Sebastian is recruited to join a mysterious organisation, the London Institute of Cognitive Science, where he meets Laura Kadinsky, a patient whose inability to see the world in three dimensions is not the only thing about her that intrigues him. Meanwhile, Clara has travelled to Easter Island to join a doomsday cult, and the third triplet, Matilda, is in Sweden, trying to escape from the colour blue. Then something happens that forces the triplets to reunite. Their mother calls with worrying news: their father has gone missing and she has something to tell them, a twenty-five-year secret that will change all their lives

The first book to come up at the library for me off the Booker longlist. What a quirky read. It definitely got slow in the middle, but I was hooked at the beginning and by the time things started to come together in the second half, I was in it until the end. It‘s a long book and certainly felt that way in parts. But, in the end, I liked it. It‘s just a bit of a commitment.

Centique Totally agree! 😍 2y
sarahbarnes @Centique I do think we felt similarly about it! 2y

On a whim, I chose this book off the International Man Booker long list. I think inspired by @rockpools yearly deep dive into this prize list. Why I chose the chunkiest book? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Masochism? Anyhow, no matter how interesting I make this review sound most of my friends here would hate this book. You have been warned. (Generally my most tepid reviews get the most stack adds 😂😂) I almost gave up on this half way. But I ended up liking it. ⬇️

Centique It has a surreal, farcical side that I liked. The boring bits, for me, were the realistic parts - some of which dragged. A hundred pages shorter would have made a big difference to my 3 star rating I‘m sure. 2y
Centique Looking at Good Reads this is the kind of book that gets 5 stars or 1 star. A marmite book! 2y
Texreader It‘s summary sounds really interesting. Trying to decide whether to stack it. 2y

rockpools 😂😂😂Apologies for putting you through that. I haven‘t been able to get hold of this one yet - very tempted to stack it though, just to prove your point about tepid reviews😜. (Totally off the point, but Gah! Reviews! I should write some of those!) My question is: IS it joyful? The blurb describes it as joyful, which is not a word I trust on IBP reads… 2y
batsy From the longlist this is the one that appeals the least. But you've managed to make it sound intriguing, as always. Great review! 2y
Centique @Texreader I do want someone else to read it so there is another point of view! 2y
Centique @rockpools that is a really good question! It does celebrate weirdness and a bunch of unusual people although they are all falling apart in their own ways. So yes, but there was quite a lot of ennui from different characters to get through on the way. I‘m sure there‘s a lot more sunlight in this one though than some others! 2y
Centique @rockpools don‘t apologise though - I‘m glad I read it! 2y
Centique @batsy thank you. It‘s tricky when a book is a chunkster - I wonder how much my review is influenced by how long it feels when you‘re in the middle. Maybe if I was a faster reader I would feel differently 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
CarolynM I will take you at your word and assume I would hate it. Whew! That‘s one less book for the never ending TBR🤣 (edited) 2y
Centique @CarolynM 😂😂😂 2y
Jeg Thanks for your review. Pretty sure I won‘t read , thick books tend to deter me. So I‘m thinking like Carolyn. 😊x 2y
BarbaraBB Fab review and thoughts. I am on the fence about this one. 2y
sarahbarnes I love your review of this! I just (finally) finished it tonight and share many of your feelings about it. I also gave it a pick - I liked it even though it dragged on in parts. 2y
Centique @sarahbarnes that‘s so interesting! Im glad you ended up liking it. I‘m so keen to read your review now 😍 2y
Rissreadswithcats I‘ll skip it! 🤣 2y
