A Child Alone with Strangers
A Child Alone with Strangers: A Novel | Philip Fracassi
2 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
Fracassis novel hits me like a cross between McCammon and '80s King. Might be one of them summer blockbusters readers love. Laird Barron, author of Worse Angels "A Child Alone with Strangers starts out as a slow burn procedural with supernatural elements and inexorably cranks itself into a pulse-pounding symphony of eldritch horrors and all-too-human violence. Philip Fracassi is the best sort of horror writer--one who is unafraid to hunt for light in even the darkest places." Shaun Hamill, author of A Cosmology of Monsters When young Henry Thorne is kidnapped and held prisoner in a remote farmhouse surrounded by miles of forest, he finds himself connecting with a strange force living in the woodsusing that bond to wreak havoc against his captors. Unknown to the boy, however, is that this ancient being has its own reasons for wanting the interlopers gonethere is something hidden beneath the house, tucked away in the dark, damp root cellar . . . waiting for its return.

Henry‘s a small child when he survives a horrific accident that leaves him with psychic ability. Due to a large settlement he gets kidnapped and taken by a gang of dangerous thugs to a house in the woods. What they don‘t count on is the creature in the woods who has been around longer than humanity. This was so good. I haven‘t read a book over 500 pgs in a while and at no point was this slow. Just one of those good old school horror chunksters.

Addison_Reads Great review. I am ashamed to admit I've had this from #NetGalley for months now but haven't read it yet. I'll definitely have to get to this one soon. 2y

Tonight I‘m in Denver and got to see these two guys, Andy Davidson and Phillip Fracassi who both have new books out in discussion. They both had great things to say. I got some books signed and because I asked a question, won an arc of Fracassi‘s next book so I was stoked! P.S. Denver cold is not the same as northern NM cold, holy crap. 🥶

TrishB Great night 👍🏻 2y
AmyG Wow! Hope you are enjoying Denver. 2y
Aimeesue It does get a mite chilly up there! Was this at the Tattered Cover? 2y

Linear Awesome! 2y
Reggie @TrishB @AmyG @Aimeesue @Linear I had a scary moment where I picked the Tattered Cover on the Uber map that wasn‘t on Colfax because I had been to that one. The Uber dropped me off in front of a dark building and it turns out it was the old closed down tattered cover before they moved to McGregor Square. Luckily this man was like just keep walking down this street and you‘ll hit it. And I arrived, freezing but I got there. 2y
AmyG If I read all the horror you read….I would have freaked the f*** out. 2y
Aimeesue @Reggie Oh no! I'm glad you finally made! I so miss the TC 2y
Centique How fantastic to win that ARC 🙌 your story of being dropped outside the abandoned building gave me chills! 🥶 2y
Reggie @Centique if I were to ever write the short story of it, they would interview the Uber driver who tells them he had begged me to get back in the car, something wasn‘t right, the broken down abandoned building but I wouldn‘t listen because he couldn‘t see the light of the store on my face. The light of the supernatural bookstore I was seeing. And how I went inside the maw of the store where it‘s greedy mouth forever closed upon me. Fin Lolololol 2y
Centique @Reggie aaaaarrrrgghh! Lured to a chomping death by supernatural lure of ghostly books…. 2y
Centique My friend told me a story last night of being a young backpacker alone on a train at night in England, approached by a creepy man who ended up telling her that at her stop she must get off with him and turn right. She turned left and ran around a street away from him and found a restaurant to hide in. The next day her friend showed her that if she‘d turned right there was an abandoned building…. 2y
Linear @Reggie well, that makes it an even more memorable experience at least lol 2y
