A lush, seductive Southern Gothic thats deliciously queer . . . K. L. Cerras gift for gorgeous, gruesome atmosphere had me spellbound.Layne Fargo, author of They Never Learn A woman investigating her brothers apparent suicide finds herself falling for her prime suspecthis darkly mysterious girlfriendin this creepy, compelling, and utterly original (Karen Dionne) thriller. Get it out of me. It was the last message Holly received from her brother, Dane, before he was found cleaved open in the lavish Savannah townhouse of his girlfriend, Maura. Police ruled his death a suicide sparked by psychosis, but Holly cant shake the idea that something else must have happenedsomething involving another message he sent earlier that night about a game Maura wanted to play. Determined to discover the truth, Holly begins to stalk Maura, a magnetic, black-eyed florist with a penchant for carnivorous plants. But what begins as an investigation quickly veers into a fixation that lures Holly into the depths of Mauras world: Savannah high society, eerie black roses, and a whisper of something more sinister. Soon Holly is feeling a dark attraction to the one woman she shouldnt trust. As Holly falls deeper for Maura and her secrets, shes left with only one choice: find out what happened to Dane or meet the same fate.

This had the makings of something compelling…but sadly it fell short. I want to say I loved it but I just can‘t. Was it the protagonist? Could be; because she did make a lot of rather sketchy decisions. Was it the antagonist? Maybe…but really it was the atmosphere…we were told about the atmosphere but we weren‘t made to feel it. The writing needed to be more descriptive and clearly I‘m not alone in this. ⬇⬇⬇

AudiobookingWithLeah - Brittany Pressley‘s voice was the perfect fit for this…so my problem was not with the narration. 7mo

Holly's brother Dane is dead. The police rule it a suicide. But Holly thinks its murder. She starts to investigate Dane's girlfriend Maura. Maura has a magnetic personality and Holly falls in love with her. Holly makes many stupid decisions, number one being to move in with Maura. The book becomes progressively more creepy as Holly gets closer to the truth. The ending was super crazy. Very atomospheric and dark. Definitely an entertaining read.

Dark read with creepy undertones. I loved the botanical flavor. Excellent & unique premise, but lackluster execution. The protagonist's dumb choices pulled me out of the story a few times because it didn't feel believable. The antagonist, however, was a nicely written, mysterious character. I liked her crazy a bit too much. A good storyline, but didn't go far enough. A lot of set up & development, but a fairly rushed, flat ending. Disappointing.

Lushly written, with vivid imagery, this impressive debut novel grips you from the very start. The book opens with Holly‘s brother‘s suicide. Grief and guilt fill her as she tries to piece together what happened in the months leading up to his death in his Savannah home. Drawn to his magnetic and enigmatic girlfriend, Maura, Holly hopes to she holds the answers she needs. With creeping horror and fresh originality, I couldn‘t put this one down!!
