At first Tally doesnt want to go to the boarding school called Delderton. But she soon discovers that it is a wonderful place where freedom and selfexpression are valued. Tally organizes a ragtag dance troupe so the school can participate in an international folk dancing festival in Bergania in the summer of 1939. There she befriends Karil, the crown prince, who would love nothing more than to have ordinary friends and attend a school like Delderton. When Karils father is assassinated, it is up to Tally and her friends to help Karil escape the Nazis and the bleak future he has inherited.

I can't stop thinking about how perfect a children's book this is. Tally gets a scholarship to a boarding school shortly before the Second World War. She expects it to be horrible and strict, but it's a weird and wonderful progressive school and she fits right in. On a trip to the Kingdom of Berania she meets lonely Prince Karil whomTally and her friends have to save from the Nazis. Every character is a delight to read and it was so much fun!

With THE DRAGONFLY POOL, Eva Ibbotson takes everything that makes her books great—charm and camaraderie and darkness and fortitude and excellent dogs—and dials it up to 11. It‘s so perfect I don‘t even know how to talk about it. 5 stars

...except after I finished, I discovered I read it back in 2012 and apparently erased all memory of it. I guess that proves perfect books AREN‘T unless you also read them at the perfect time.

I just had the weirdest experience, y‘all. I finished THE DRAGONFLY POOL by Eva Ibbotson. I cried over it because it was FRICKIN PERFECT, and went to add it to my LibraryThing catalogue, and got a Duplicate Entry notification.

Because apparently I read it in 2012, when I really liked it but wasn‘t blown away. I have absolutely no memory of this.

This has never happened to me before. Casey is unimpressed and also judgey.

Eyelit I‘ve had the same experience with a book! It‘s a little unsettling. 😄 5y
xicanti @Eyelit she‘s one of my favourite authors, so I don‘t know whether I‘m more stymied I remembered NOTHING about it or that 2012 Me failed to recognize the book‘s excellence. 5y

THE DRAGONFLY POOL is amazing so far. How is Eva Ibbotson so good?????

I listened to a big chunk of the book while I made two batches of cookies from SISTER PIE. I decided to put the peanut butter paprika dough in the freezer against future need, but I went ahead and baked the buttered rum shortbread straight off. Soon as it cools, I‘ll try a cookie and see if I consider the icing necessary. #audiobaking

Mitch Oooo.... haven‘t tried the cookie yet. They look amazing. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 5y
xicanti @Mitch I just tried one, and they‘re delicious! I‘ll leave them un-iced; I think the extra sweetness might swallow up too much of their spiced tang for my palette. 5y
Mitch @xicanti you‘ve inspired me to tackle the cookies next! 5y

Mitch @xicanti glad you like it. I tackled croissants today! 5y
xicanti @Mitch I‘ve still gotta rise to that challenge. Lamination intimidates me. (edited) 5y
Crazeedi Yum! 5y

The school is the place where you can find who you really are... A book about the dream school, friendship, the power of love and the Second World War at the same time!
