A gripping graphic novel that tells a boys experience in a WWII Japanese internment camp, and the lessons that baseball teaches him. Sandy Saito is a happy boy whos obsessed with baseball especially the Asahi team, the pride of his community. But when the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor, his life, like that of every North American of Japanese descent, changes forever. Forced to move to a remote internment camp, he and his family cope as best they can. And though life at the camp is difficult, Sandy finds solace in baseball, where theres always the promise of possibilities. Through his experience, Sandy comes to realize that life is a lot like baseball. Its about dealing with whatever is thrown at you, however you can. And its about finding your way home.

Pickpick

Japanese internment camps were miserable-no running water, no electricity, and very cramped conditions. These people were American citizens who worked hard and had families; they gave up so much 😔 But according to the authors of this graphic novel, baseball brought them together and helped maintain their hope and lift their spirits.

tonymp Do you think the book privileges sports activities? What about the people that didn't like baseball? 13mo

tonymp @Eggs What I meant to ask was if you thought the graphic novel assumes everyone at the internment camps loved baseball. Perhaps I misunderstood your summary, which could be about specific individuals or everyone at the camps. Anyway, it isn't important. 13mo
