A moving middle-grade novel in verse, about a young trans boy dealing with the loss of his friend by writing to his favorite cryptid, Mothman Halfway through sixth grade, Noahs best friend and the only other trans boy in his school, Lewis, passed away in a car accident. Lewis was adventurous and curious, always bringing a new paranormal story to share with Noah. Together they daydreamed about cryptids and shared discovering their genders and names. After his death, lonely and yearning for someone who could understand him like Lewis once did, Noah starts writing letters to Mothman, wondering if he would understand how Noah feels and also looking for evidence of Mothmans existence in the vast woods surrounding his small Poconos town. Noah becomes determined to make his science fair project about Mothman, despite his teachers and parents urging him to make a project about something real. Meanwhile, as Noah tries to find Mothman, Noah also starts to make friends with a group of girls in his grade, Hanna, Molly, and Alice, with whom hed been friendly, but never close to. Now, they welcome him, and he starts to open up to each of them, especially Hanna, who Noah has a crush on. But as strange things start to happen and Noah becomes sure of Mothmans existence, his parents and teachers dont believe him. Noah decides its up to him to risk everything, trek into the woods, and find Mothman himself.

Lovely. Explorations of grief and identity; perspective of trans, queer and autistic experience from an own voices author. Cryptid metaphor regarding othering of queer and transgender people accessibly conveyed for middle grade readers. Sketchy art style of Rebecca Harry's illustrations have such a life and sweetness to them. 1/3

Robotswithpersonality 2/3 Gotta say, I struggled as an adult reading children engaging in risky behaviour, even in a narrative with that tone of 'of course everything will turn out alright'. Took me a bit to get on board with an expansion in the perspectives offered. You spend a larger portion of the book only reading from Noah's POV, as he writes to Mothman and about his daily life, so that addition of Hannah, while it makes sense, felt a little jarring. 5mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 And while I'm humbugging, I have to say I'd describe this as an epistolary novel. I've heard it described as a novel in verse and I don't know enough about the parameters to be the arbitrator for whether this fits the definition, but I'm biased toward a certain structure in poems, even if they don't rhyme, and besides paragraph break formatting, that was not in evidence here. 5mo

Tricky angle to get with the library tape holding the dust jacket on, but it's important to me that you know there is a lavender foil Mothman on the hardcover of this book. 🤩

I read this back in March for #TransRightsReadathon and really enjoyed it. Naturally, I didn't read the description before diving into what I thought would be a fluffy book, so I was blindsided by the intense portrayal of childhood grief. I loved the exploration of identity and friendship, as well as exploring social life on the autism spectrum. I didn't realize it was a novel in verse because I listened to the audiobook. #LGBTQIA

Kenyazero Used for #OwlHouseReadathon Hooty: Penpals; #LGBTQBookBingo2024 #LGBTQIA2024 Poetry In Motion; and #GottaCatchEmAll @PuddleJumper Lapras: There is a journey and Set near a body of water, which catches Lapras! 5mo

The reasons I struggled to connect with this book were all mine. It‘s not the usual POV I go for and the struggles were nearly all internal which makes the story lag for me. But I was fascinated with Mothman and how Noah used him to process his grief for his friend.

Told in verse, a young trans boy deals with the tragic death of his best friend as he writes letters to the cryptid, Mothman. Poetic and emotionally moving, this middle grade book explores identity, death, healing, and wonder in this coming of age story.
