Pickpick

Well, it took me the best part of the year to finish this 824-page monster, but here it is, completed!
Not much, really, that I can say about Holmes and Watson that hasn't been said. They're firm favourites, and I finish this reading feeling somewhat sad to have done so.
This particular 2-volume collection is annotated for the mid-20th century USA reader, explaining some of the eccentricities of Victorian/Edwardian English culture, but mainly ⬇️

Bookwomble ... very, very concerned with establishing the exact in-story dates of the adventures, with reference not only to the calendar, but also considering weather, lunar, political and historical information. This is either dull as ditch water or of enormous fascination, depending on your degree of interest. I'll leave it to you, perspicacious reader, to deduce into which category I fall 🔎📖 🧐 4mo

I have Book Ennui ?
Sherlock Holmes is my refuge in this time of existential crisis, however, "The Adventure of the Dancing Men" begins: "Holmes had been seated for some hours in silence..." ?
Perhaps a 7% solution? ? (Joking)
Writing this has raised my spirits somewhat ?

AmyG Your sweet cat ❤️ 5mo
Bookwomble @AmyG Ah, it's an internet cat. I'd feel less full of ennui if I had a cat, but I'm not quite ready to take in another since mine died last February. Perhaps in the spring, though 🙂 5mo
dabbe My annotated SH are priceless to me. Do you have the Klinger ones? And “The Dancing Men“ is one of my top five of his! 🤩😀😃 5mo

Ruthiella Agatha Christie, Terry Pratchett and/or PG Wodehouse are what cures my book ennui. Good luck! 😊 5mo
Bookwomble @dabbe I do have the Klinger 3-volume set, though the one I'm reading at the moment is the Sabine-Gould 2-volume set 😊 5mo
Bookwomble @Ruthiella It's good to have authors you can rely on 😊 5mo
dabbe @Bookwomble Ooh, I'll have to check those out, too! 🤩🤩🤩 5mo
Bookwomble @dabbe I've tagged you in an earlier post from when I bought these editions so that you can check them 🙂 5mo

"Am dining at Goldini's Restaurant, Gloucester Road, Kensington. Please come at once and join me there. Bring with you a jemmy, a dark lantern, a chisel, and a revolver. - S.H."
- The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans

I love Holmes's telegrams to Watson ? So peremptory and dryly humorous: an invitation to dinner becoming an invitation to burglary! I can imagine the sparkle in Holmes's eye and his wry smile as he dictated the message ?

dabbe Is that my fave Jeremy Brett? 🤩🤩🤩 7mo

Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja Thank you 😊 This is already on my radar 😁 5mo

"Is there any other point to which you would wish to draw my attention?"
"To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time."
"The dog did nothing in the night-time."
"That was the curious incident," remarked Sherlock Holmes.

Bookwomble @Kerrbearlib Data as Holmes was a perfect stroke by the Star Trek writers 😊 12mo
