Honeybees and Distant Thunder
Honeybees and Distant Thunder: The million copy award-winning Japanese bestseller | Riku Onda
4 posts | 5 read | 18 to read
THE MILLION-COPY AWARD-WINNING JAPANESE BESTSELLER In a small coastal town just a stone's throw from Tokyo, a prestigious piano competiton is underway. Over the course of two feverish weeks, three students will experience some of the most joyous - and painful - moments of their lives. Though they don't know it yet, each will profoundly and unpredictably change the others, for ever. Aya is a piano genius, well, she was, until she ran away from the stage and vanished; will Makun, tall and talented in every way, bring her back? Or will it be child of nature, Jin, a pianist without a piano, who carries the sound of his father's bees wherever he goes? Each of them will break the rules, awe their fans and push themselves to the brink. But at what cost? Tender, cruel, compelling, HONEYBEES AND DISTANT THUNDER is the unflinching story of love, courage and rivalry. Most of all, it shows how three young people reconcile with the highs and lows of what it means to truly be a friend. Japanese readers love HONEYBEES AND DISTANT THUNDER ***** 'The novel is a masterpiece. I applaud the author for her powers of description. The author's extraordinary affection for music made this work seem so complete' ***** 'Each contestant was wonderfully drawn, and I felt moved, as if I were truly hearing each and every musical piece. I also felt the significance of how a competition can create connections between people' ***** 'I felt like I was right there, with the audience, watching the performances, and there were scenes that brought me to tears' ***** 'This is beyond a reading experience. I felt I was actually listening to the music. It felt like some sixth sense was at work. Wonderful'

Holy Little Free Library score, Batman! Honeybees has been high on my TBR after @squirrelbrain and @BarbaraBB sang its praises earlier this year. And I was able to see Holly Hogan talk earlier this year at a book event, which sparked my interest in her book!

squirrelbrain Wow, that‘s amazing from a LFL! ❤️ Honeybees is on my #top23 list, which I haven‘t posted yet…. 12mo
BarbaraBB On mine too @squirrelbrain! I hope you‘ll like it @TheKidUpstairs (edited) 12mo

A lovely work of Japanese fiction - just what I needed! A beautiful story about music and a piano competition. It was enthralling to read about the rounds of the competition as they unfolded and to be inside the characters‘ minds as they thought about music.

@BarbaraBB

BarbaraBB So glad (and a bit relieved) that you enjoyed it! 1y
sarahbarnes @BarbaraBB I really did! It was so unique and lovely. 1y

All the stars for this wonderful novel about a piano competition in Japan. We get to know the main participants and can root for the one we‘d like to win. All are experiencing the competition in their own way and are growing in their music. Music that plays the main role in this novel. I learned so much about classical music, its evolution, the composers, their meaning and the various interpretations. I really loved it!

BarbaraBB @Megabooks oh no, o didn‘t know you already had a copy. I just (today!) sent you the book by Amazon to thank you for being such an awesome Camp counselor. I tried to cancel the order but I can‘t, which sucks because I really just ordered it. I am so sorry!! 1y
squirrelbrain I‘m glad you loved it. I think it might make my favourites list this year. 1y
Megabooks Oh no! I picked it up at Parnassus earlier this summer after H read it. If it‘s Amazon, I should be able to work out an exchange easily. Thank you so much for thinking of me!! 💕😘💕 I have a book I‘ve been meaning to send you plus (somehow) I‘m organized enough to already have your birthday and Christmas presents picked out 🤯🤯 Would you mind if I sent them all at once and marked which were which? 1y
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain Mine too, easily! 1y

This is likely to be in my favourites of the year - I adored it!

Following a number of pianists as they compete in a prestigious competition in Japan, it‘s a beautifully written, quiet, contemplative read, but with tense moments of jeopardy too. It almost reads like non-fiction in places, in a good way.

I learnt so much about classical music and kept listening to snippets of the pieces mentioned to understand more.

A wonderful book!

BarbaraBB Oooh this is the one I wanted to read for #camplitsy23! Stacking of course! 2y
jlhammar I'm definitely going to have to check this one out. Sounds great! 2y

Hooked_on_books Sounds interesting. And what a beautiful spot you found for your picture! 2y
squirrelbrain @Hooked_on_books - it‘s from our campsite! Not right from the van unfortunately as we picked a shady spot without a view as it‘s 🥵 here, but only 100 metres away. 2y
Megabooks I almost bought this at Parnassus, and now I really wish I had! You camp in the most beautiful locations! 2y
Megabooks Bought this yesterday at Parnassus! Didn‘t pass it up this time! 2y
