Pete and Alice in Maine
Pete and Alice in Maine: A Novel | Caitlin Shetterly
7 posts | 5 read | 6 to read
"Pete and Alice in Maine is a tender, big-hearted, clear-eyed portrait of a marriage, and a family, in crisis—set during the plague years when the entire world was in crisis. As she investigates the insidious effect of lies, betrayal, fear, and anger, not to mention the mundane joys and wrenching heartaches of everyday life, Caitlin Shetterly gets to the heart of what it means to be a family.” — Christina Baker Kline, New York Times bestselling author of The Exiles A powerful and beautifully written debut novel that intimately explores a fractured marriage and the struggles of modern parenthood, set against the backdrop of the chaotic spring of 2020. Reeling from a painful betrayal in her marriage as the Covid pandemic takes hold in New York City, Alice packs up her family and flees to their vacation home in Maine. She hopes to find sanctuary—from the uncertainties of the exploding pandemic and her faltering marriage. Putting distance between herself and the stresses and troubles of the city, Alice begins to feel safe and relieved. But the locals are far from friendly. Trapped and forced into quarantine by hostile neighbors, Alice sees the imprisoning structure of her life in his new predicament. Stripped down to the bare essentials of survival and tending to the needs of her two children, she can no longer ignore all the ways in which she feels limited and lost—lost in the big city, lost as a wife, lost as a mother, lost as a daughter and lost as a person. As the world shifts around her and the balance in her marriage tilts, Alice and her husband, Pete, are left to consider if what keeps their family safe is the same thing as what keeps their family together.

I‘m drawn to pandemic novels and marital dramas right now, so this was right up my alley. (Pic is from a trip this summer. I no longer have the library book.)

Pete & Alice along with their two daughters are some of the most annoying, privileged, whiny people I‘ve come across in some time. It was really difficult to sympathize with them, however there was something compelling in the storytelling for me to keep on reading. Set during the pandemic, a wealthy NY family flees Manhattan for their summer cottage in Maine bringing with them all the troubles that have been plaguing them.

Megabooks Lol! Of course we don‘t agree again, but I appreciate you‘re review! 8mo

This was an interesting pandemic book with an unclear ending. I‘ve managed to see it both ways, and idk which I prefer.

As the Covid closes in on Manhattan, Pete and Alice head to their summer house in Maine to wait out the pandemic, but their martial problems (and the kids‘ reactions to them) follow them there.

squirrelbrain Sounds like my kind of book - stacking. 8mo
Megabooks @squirrelbrain @Cinfhen yay! Stack up another great rec from Parnassus‘s Tuesday laydown diaries! I learn about so many good books there. Helen, it‘s on YouTube in addition to social media since I know you‘re not on Insta. 8mo
Cinfhen Listening now, I‘m finding all the period talk a little cringey -and none of these family members are likeable. I cant stop listening but I‘m not sure I‘m liking it 😬 8mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen definitely not likable, but I appreciated their struggle and the particular way the author went about unraveling the problems in their marriage. I guess I just like fallible characters. 🤔 8mo

Finished this on another rainy Maine day. I enjoyed it despite the characters being difficult. I think it is well written and captured some of the anxiety and pressures Covid put on people and their relationships.
