The Autobiography of Mark Twain
The Autobiography of Mark Twain: Deluxe Modern Classic | Charles Neider

Due to copyright restrictions, this eBook may not contain all of the images available in the print edition. "Mark Twain's autobiography is a classic of American letters, to be ranked with the autobiographies of Benjamin Franklin and Henry Adams.... It has the marks of greatness in it--style, scope, imagination, laughter, tragedy."--From the Introduction by Charles Neider Mark Twain was a figure larger than fife: massive in talent, eruptive in temperament, unpredictable in his actions. He crafted stories of heroism, adventure, tragedy, and comedy that reflected the changing America of the time, and he tells his own story--which includes sixteen pages of photos--with the same flair he brought to his fiction. Writing this autobiography on his deathbed, Twain vowed to he "free and frank and unembarrassed" in the recounting of his life and his experiences. Twain was more than a match for the expanding America of riverboats, gold rushes, and the vast westward movement, which provided the material for his novels and which served to inspire this beloved and uniquely American autobiography.

This book is hard to rank because parts of it are wonderful, very engaging, and deeply moving. However, Samuel Clemens knew that this would only be published after he died so he took no care in editing the content. This book brings out his raw person throughout the ups and downs of his life. Ultimately, I‘d say it‘s great if you‘re a Mark Twain fan, not great if you‘re looking for a gripping classic.

The forward warns that the book is barely edited as it was published posthumously. This was to keep it close to Twain's actually state of mind. The book is very informative. However, listening to the audio book was mind numbing. Mark Twain's stream of conscious writing gives the reader detailed descriptions of the minute details of breakfast, without substance. A must read for Twain enthusiasts, but a pass for the casual Twain reader.

Pickpick

One of the most humorous, and at times, heartbreaking, book I've ever read. It's amazing- even more so if you're familiar with Twain's work. I'm going to buy it in hard cover as soon as I get a little more book money.

OSChamberlain One of my holy trinity 🙏🏻 love me some Twain! 8y
