For fans of Jacqueline Winspear and Charles Todd, Murder by Degrees is a historical mystery set in 19th century Philadelphia, following a pioneering woman doctor as she investigates the disappearance of a young patient who is presumed dead. Philadelphia, 1875: It is the start of term at Womans Medical College of Pennsylvania. Dr. Lydia Weston, professor and anatomist, is immersed in teaching her students in the lecture hall and hospital. When the body of a patient, Anna Ward, is dredged out of the Schuylkill River, the young chambermaids death is deemed a suicide. But Lydia is suspicious and she is soon brought into the police investigation. Aided by a diary filled with cryptic passages of poetry, Lydia discovers more about the young woman she thought she knew. Through her skill at the autopsy table and her clinical acumen, Lydia draws nearer the truth. Soon a terrible secret, long hidden, will be revealed. But Lydia must act quickly, before she becomes the next target of those who wished to silence Anna.

Good mystery. Set in Philadelphia in 1875. Good historical detail. Main character is a doctor and the dead woman was her patient. A lot of time is spent describing her work with patients, which doesn't directly relate to the mystery. There are numerous clinical but graphic descriptions of injuries, blood, autopsy, etc.

An excellent historical mystery set in Philadelphia, 1875. The primary character is Lydia Weston, a physician at Women‘s Medical College of Pennsylvania and the book‘s debut author is herself. A doctor

Police discover an apparent suicide of a patient treated by Dr. Weston. The autopsy reveals that she was murdered and that she was a different person. The investigation reveals horrific crimes. A good read and, I hope the start of a series.

A soft pick but with potential. 😊 This is a historical mystery debut centered around Dr. Lydia Weston, an anatomist and medical professor in 1875 Philadelphia. She treats a young woman in service as a maid in a wealthy home and is drawn into a friendship as she admires and encourages Anna‘s drive and yearning for further education. When Anna disappears, she works with an inspector and his sergeant to uncover what happened to her and discovers a🔻

robinb myriad of secrets and coverups. I enjoyed this mystery although I had guessed the villain before the unveiling. I did have two issues though. The pacing of the book was a little off as there were stretches which were somewhat boring and could have used some tightening up. And while I appreciated the insight into the obstacles faced by women doctors during this time, there was entirely too much medical jargon. I understand 🔻 8mo
robinb that the author is an internist herself, but while somewhat interesting, there was simply an overabundance of medical-related facts…listings of various bones of the body, medical procedures, etc. Other than those frustrations, I do hope that this might be the start of a series as I think it definitely has potential. 3.5/5⭐️ (edited) 8mo

Today, I‘m sharing a book I received in the mail today from Simon & Schuster. I‘m looking forward to reading this. It sounds like the perfect Fall read.
