Little Sister Death
Little Sister Death | William Gay
17 posts | 17 read | 55 to read
Little Sister Death is the stunning 'lost' horror novel of the late William Gay. Inspired by the famous 19th Century Bell Witch haunting of Tennessee, it follows the unravelling life of David Binder, a writer who moves his young family to a haunted farmstead to try and find inspiration for his faltering work... Beautifully written and structured, Little Sister Death is a loving and faithful addition to the field of classic horror writing, eschewing any notions of irony or post-modern tricks as it aims, instead, straight for your soul.

My previous reading of william gay 'twilight' was an incredibly unsettling tale and Ive been looking fwd to trying him again. This was published posthumously +the end is ambiguous but the overall tale of a writer moving bk to tenessee w wife + dtr to use the 'Bell witch' legend as inspiration for a horror, +staying on the haunted farm allowed for some v unsettling scenes. I just wished there had been 50 pages more.

batsy I've long wanted to read this... Just a little terrified 😳 3y
andrew61 @batsy it is creepy but strange as it felt like there was a couple of chapters missing and as it was posthumously published I wondered if it was unfinished. I did enjoy it though and will definitely read more. 3y

I so wanted to love this. I really did. William Gay writes beautifully, making it hard NOT to hang on every word, but the writing wasn't enough to save the work this time. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of positives, but it simply felt incomplete and a little all over the place. My favorite part was the introduction focusing on Gay's life written by Tom Franklin. If only the entire book had been that fascinating. Oh well. On to the next one.

He knew the house was awake now, he could stand in its center and feel its heart beating around him, synced with his own breathing when he breathed, feel its attention on him, alert and focused as a cat watching a broken-winged bird.

Procrastinating on Litsy because I'm afraid to finish a haunting book alone with the baby on what's turning out to be a dark and dreary evening. 😨

Kinda creepy, not really that scary and the end was a little too abrupt for me. I gave it 3 🌟.

I really enjoyed this one. It ranked up there with Haunting of Hill House for me. Gay layers in so many details that let you picture the scene perfectly, but he does it in a way that keeps the story moving. I definitely got the southern Gothic vibe off of this and the slow build of atmosphere and tension made it a perfect Halloween read. I'm looking forward to reading more of his work.

Dinner reading. It's supposed to be amazing. Fingers crossed! 📚🤘🏻💕

djm001 Anything by William Gay is worth it. I started reading Twilight yesterday. 8y
LisaJo Well, I will be adding this to my TBR simply because Tom Franklin wrote the introduction. I would read anything that Tom Franklin writes, even if it's just an introduction to a book. 8y
emilygatlin OMG WILLIAM GAY. He was a cool dude. 8y

britt_brooke @SarahK @emilygatlin I don't live terribly far from Adams now. But I'm too chicken to read any books about the Bell Witch. 😳 8y
emilygatlin @SarahK @britt_brooke I'm from Clarksville, and I had friends who lived in Adams. We used to freak ourselves out. Even being in close proximity was enough. 😱 8y

SarahK @emilygatlin I grew up on Clarksville! In elementary school we just to say 'I hate the bell witch' in the mirror instead of doing Bloody Mary. And by we i mean not me, I was too scared! 8y

I'm bouncing around on my reads, but I finished this one yesterday. William Gay's prose is so good. He paints you a picture of the beautiful nature of Tennessee with a corruption of darkness. This is a worthy addition to the haunted house genre.

Liberty Oooooo, I have this somewhere! 9y

A literary horror novel filled with beautiful writing and a creepy storyline. I wish he would have been able to complete it. Nevertheless, I am excited to read more of Gay's novels.
