WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME THAT ANN PATCHETT IS AMAZING?
Oh, right, pretty much everyone did. My bad. Almost finished the audio of Commonwealth. Patchett fans: What's her best book?

"Nobody wanted to hear that America's ascent to the Moon had been made with a ladder of bones."
????????
Enjoyed this. I love Chabon's writing.
NO JOKE: sustained a hand injury from reading this huge book. Mixed feelings - the story dragged here and there - but overall I was impressed.
"We say of some things that they can't be forgiven, or that we will never forgive ourselves. But we do - we do it all the time." - From Dear Life by Alice Munro
Sigh. This is such a fantastic last line for a book. Who else loves Alice Munro?
Sad to learn that William Trevor died. He was one of my favorite writers and wrote one of my favorite short stories, "A Day".
For my #FunFridayPhoto:
No One Belongs Here More Than You by Miranda July. These short stories are weird, unforgettable and moving. Also: the title is just a great thing I need to remind myself of sometimes. On the left is a self portrait drawn by my six-year-old.
Is anyone watching Younger on TVLand? I am loving this show, even if it does require some suspension of disbelief. A romantic comedy set at publishing house? I'm in!

#canlit - medicine for my homesickness! 🇨🇦
Anyone read? Five stars from my sister in the Yukon.
Got this copy on Amazon - a library discard that I cleaned with many Lysol wipes until it was white again.
A dream-like book about family, destiny and home. In The Mortifications the family is the Encarnacions and home is Cuba 🇨🇺 and Hartford, Connecticut.
I'm always drawn to stories and characters that show the complexity of belonging - or not - to a place and how that shapes our identity.
Dear friend, I have searched all night
through each burnt paper,
but I fear I will never find
the formula to let you die.

Let's see if this will distract me from my raging anxiety!
Started this last night - anyone read it?
About to tie one on, folks! 🎉🎉🎉
That is, I am about to read this book and maybe make homemade pizza later.
One of my fall traditions is picking up the new Best American Short Stories and The O. Henry Prize stories. I read a couple every day and really savor them. Junot Diaz edited this edition of The Best American Short Stories and so far it is excellent with plenty of diverse voices.
My favorite kind of book - makes you laugh and smacks you around a little.
It's Nevada Day! Today I honor my crazy state and a fantastic writer and native Nevadan, Claire Vaye Watkins.
I guess the barrel was the only thing that sparked joy for Pickles...
If you were a fan of Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan novels I think you'll like this. The story of a complex relationship between two women. Moving.

#booktober Snacks! Mini popcorn and mini Tootsie rolls - everything must be mini! 🍿🍬
Has any read The Door? Digging in for a big Friday read.
I've pinpointed the dark night of the soul in I Wish that I Had Duck Feet...
'Tis the season! 🎃 🍁🍂🔮🕸🕷👀
The essay "Cassandra Among the Creeps" feels especially relevant right now...
Maria Semple for life! 🙌 This book is funny. She had me at the internal banjo getaway music following school drop off.
"A woman reading is a grave temptation." From Fialta in Bobcat and Other Stories by Rebecca Lee. Love this book!

"Once upon a time, Vanessa felt that she, too, had a good heart. This was (she now knew) an estimable lie. Her love for her husband, her love for Ginger had nothing to do with goodness. Loving was about need and fear and commitment and survival."
It's no secret that the great American pastime is no longer baseball. Now it's sanctimony.
"...I want you to get me out of here and drive me away, out in the desert into the sun-steeped scene of a bigger, darker world."
"It is against my entire code, but then, I have never begun to use my code, although I judge everything by it." - Jane Bowles, Two Serious Ladies
