Prepare to meet the world's most dangerous man . . . Nicholai Hel-genius, mystic, and the perfect, formidable assassin-was first introduced to readers in Shibumi, the classic #1 bestseller by master storyteller Trevanian. Now critically acclaimed author Don Winslow continues Hel's story for the first time in this all-new, blockbuster thriller. SATORI It is the fall of 1951, and the Korean War is raging. Twenty-six-year-old Nicholai Hel has spent the last three years in solitary confinement at the hands of the Americans. Hel is a master of hoda korosu, or "naked kill," is fluent in seven languages, and has honed extraordinary "proximity sense"-an extra-awareness of the presence of danger. He has the skills to be the world's most fearsome assassin and now the CIA needs him. The Americans offer Hel freedom, money, and a neutral passport in exchange for one small service: to go to Beijing and kill the Soviet Union's commissioner to China. It's almost certainly a suicide mission, but Hel accepts. Now he must survive chaos, violence, suspicion, and betrayal while trying to achieve his ultimate goal of satori-the possibility of true understanding and harmony with the world.

*Not the tagged book* ‘Dietrich,‘ a short story, by Don Winslow is set during the summer of 1977 in New York City. Homicide detective Richard Dietrich, weary and on the brink of burnout, is assigned to investigate a brutal mob hit that his superiors are desperate to bury. I love how Winslow surprises me with his unexpected conclusions, and this one was particularly captivating!

*Not the tagged book* Master storyteller Don Winslow‘s short story, ‘The Heron,‘ masterfully blends crime, dark humor, and revenge in his signature gritty style. The story follows a big-city accountant, nicknamed “The Heron,” who seemingly leads a quiet life near San Diego. His peaceful existence is disrupted when he suspects a hitman may be after him due to his boss‘s suspicion of him stealing.

*Not the tagged book* This was another fantastic short story by Don Winslow! Set in Rhode Island in 1970, the story of ‘Oregon‘ revolves around five close best friends. These high school friends share a common goal: to escape the Vietnam draft by going off the grid before turning 18. To achieve this, they raise money by selling marijuana and plan to move to Oregon to open a commune.

*Not the tagged book* I‘m a big fan of Don Winslow‘s books, and I find him exceptionally talented at writing short stories. I acquired the novella, Deep Hole, through my Audible membership. Ed Harris provides an excellent narration.

A worthy follow up to Shibumi. It fills in some of the time left open by the original, and manages to capture all that made it wonderful. It is faster paced and filled with action, but it also leaves one with the time to appreciate the mystery, beauty, and wisdom that it has to offer.
