Things in the Basement
Things in the Basement | Ben Hatke
6 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
From New York Times bestselling author Ben Hatke comes Things in the Basement, a young readers graphic novel about Milo, a young boy who discovers a portal to a secret world in his basement. It was supposed to just be a normal basementsome storage boxes, dust, you know, the usual basement stuff. But when Milo is sent by his mother to fetch a sock from the basement of the historic home they've moved into, Milo finds a door in the back that he's never seen before. Turns out that the basement of his house is enormous. In fact, there is a whole world down there. As Milo travels ever deeper into the Basement World, he meets the many Things that live in the shadows and gloom...and he learns that to face his fears he must approach even the strangest creatures with kindness.

I love Hatke‘s books! Sent to the basement to find his sister‘s missing sock, Milo soon finds himself on an unbelievable adventure when he discovers the basement is far larger, older, & more mysterious than he could have anticipated. A marvelous story about finding your courage, friendship, compassion, and curiosity. There is plenty of adventure & just the right amount of danger in this fabulous, wonderfully illustrated MG graphic novel.

#Bookmail is THE best mail…even when vol. 5 of Spy x Family comes in before volumes 2, 3, and 4. 🤷‍♀️

Excited about all these but especially the tagged book—Hatke writes truly fantastic MG graphic novels and I‘ve heard good things about this one.

Ben Hatke could not write a bad book if he tried. While his books are meant for kids, they pull at the heartstrings of all ages. In this book we follow Milo as he searches for his baby sibling‘s sock. Milo and his family have just moved into the new house and the basement is a tad bit scary. This basement isn‘t just scary. It‘s crazy. It‘s crazy big and Milo meet some new fantastic friends. They are very few words in this book.

LibrarianRyan And it doesn‘t need them. Ben creates not just a story, but a heart gladdening tale that you hope there‘s a sequel to. This book is adventure from beginning to end and love from one scene to the next. In my eyes Ben Hatke can do no wrong and this is just another of his five star reads. 1y

Just in time for Halloween…Ben Hatke‘s latest graphic gem is full of spooky adventures where young Milo learns to face his fears and help others. Short on words but full of art this book is highly recommended for anyone who‘s ever been afraid of what might be lurking in the basement! The artistic changing jewel tones are also a unique touch.

If you have kids, or know kids, or anyone with an inner child, or just basically anyone with eyes, get them Things in the Basement. Spooky adventure, confronting fears, found family, history and art (including fibre art). It's delicious. An easy five stars.
