Puppets begins with a shockingly sad ending. And it ends with a predictably light-filled beginning (predictable if you know Kate DiCamillo). At first, I thought, “I can‘t imagine a single child I would give this to.” By the time I finished the story and read the words on the back cover, “This is a story that‘s perfect for savoring alone or *for reading aloud and sharing with those you love* [emphasis mine],” I vehemently agreed.

Such a delight! Full of loss and hope and longing and healing—as only Kate DiCamillo can write it. 💜

I purchased a copy for the kids and downloaded the audio from the Timberland Regional Library. I'm not a very good listener which makes me admire audiophiles. I may need to give it a second listen. It reminded me of Edward Tulane. I loved the characters, but I may need more info before I admit it deserves 5 ⭐

While this was a cute, whimsical tale, I don‘t think kids would be pulled into the story.

5 ⭐️s
This story follows the adventures of 5 puppets who long to fulfill their calling to tell a story. I wasn't sure what to expect from this little book, and I certainly did not expect it to be so poignant and serious and deep (I don't know why not though because that's Kate DiCamillo in a nutshell). This tale is a master class in subtlety and meaning. Absolutely brilliant in every way.

This is the first in a new series for young readers by this author. I found it to be an easy and creative read. To be fair this is one of my favorite children writers so I may be a wee bit biased. Keep an eye out as it releases next month!
