Glass, Paper, Beans: Revolutions on the Nature and Value of Ordinary Things
Glass, Paper, Beans: Revolutions on the Nature and Value of Ordinary Things | Leah Hager Cohen
3 posts | 3 to read
Once upon a time, we knew the origins of things: what piece of earth the potatoon our dinner plate came from, which well our water was dipped from, who cobbled our shoes, and whose cow provided the leather. In many parts of the world, that information is still readily available. But in our society, even as technology makes certain kinds of information more accessible than ever, other connections are irrevocably lost. In "Glass, Paper, Beans," Leah Cohen traces three simple commodities on their geographic and semantic journey from her rickety table in the Someday Cafe to their various points of origin. And through the intimate portraits of three everyday workers-- Ruth Lamp, a night-shift supervisor at the Anchor Hocking glass factory in Ohio; Brent Boyd, a third-generation lumberjack from Plumweseep, Canada; and Basilio Salinas, a man who tends the coffee trees at Pluma Hidalgo, Mexico--a whole new world of connections and values are realized as Cohen, Oz-like, draws the reader across time and continents. In prose both sophisticated and stunningly simple, Leah Cohen braids the lives of these three unforgettable workers as she traces the origins, myths, and manufacture of glass, paper, and the beloved coffee bean. An elegant and inspired inquiry into the true nature of things, "Glass, Paper, Beans" is a classic work on the economy of everyday life.Leah Hager Cohen is the author of "Train Go Sorry: Inside a Deaf World," chosen by the American Library Association as one of the best books of 1994. She lives outside of Boston with her husband and son.

"...only four or five thousand years ago that people began to make #glass themselves. And when they did, having finally solved the riddle of its creation, their first impulse was not a practical one; they did not direct their energies into making a useful tool of glass. Instead, they began by crafting it in an imitation of natural wonders-gems and precious stones-and for nothing but personal adornment, for no sake but loveliness."

DebinHawaii I like my #glass to be both practical and lovely. 😉 6y

#AugustGrrrl #RaiseYourGlass 🥂Since I recently posted my cocktail recipe books, I went for books with glass in the title for today's prompt. Most of these are from my Kindle #TBR stack except the tagged book which I've read & have on my shelves & The Glass Magician (I read the series on e-book #ARCs from Netgalley). 🍷🥛🍸🥃🍺🥂

kalinichta That world history book looks really interesting. 7y

#AugustPhotoChallenge #booksandstationery I have a thing for notebooks-from basic composition books to fun/fancy ones. I don't journal per se but fill them w/ random notes. Sticky tabs are another weakness-I use the basic ones to tag recipes in cookbooks & some (like the little sushi ones) are too cute to use! The book embosser was a gift from a bookish friend & the book traces the origins of glass, coffee beans & paper & seemed appropriate! ❤️📚

KVanRead ❤️Anne Taintor 8y
DebinHawaii @KVanRead Me too! This "She had not yet decided whether to use her power for good... or for evil" is my favorite. I have it on a fridge magnet too. ❤️? 8y
