Maudie lives with her mom and stepdad during the school year but is starting another summer with her dad when they have to evacuate due to a wildfire. As they find a place to stay near the beach, Maudie begins making new friends. As the reader learns about autism through her experiences, she keeps secrets from her dad about learning to surf and life with her mom. I loved Maudie‘s first person story.

I don‘t think I‘ve ever read a book with an autistic narrator before Maudie! Seeing through her first person point-of-view the way she experiences the world was eye-opening. I was grateful for the cast of adults who modeled appropriate behavior, discouraged secret keeping, and were unique, interesting people who helped show Maudie the wonderful person she is. And I‘d be thrilled if her mom and Ron fell off the face of the planet. ✌️
