4 posts | 2 read | 6 to read
A thrilling new novel from the bestselling, award-winning Akwaeke Emezi, about five friends trying to outrun and outmatch a powerful, underground world One weekend. The elite underbelly of a Nigerian city. A breakup that starts a spiral. A party that goes awry. A tangled web of sex and lies and corruption that leaves no one unscathed. Little Rot is a whirling journey through the citys dark side, told through the eyes of five people, each determined to run from the twisted powers out to destroy them. Aima and Kalu are a longtime couple who have just split. When Kalu, reeling from his loss, visits a sex party hosted by his best friend, Ahmed, he makes a decision that will plunge them all into chaos, brutally upending their lives. Ola and Souraya, two Nigerian sex workers visiting from Kuala Lumpur, intersect with the three old friends as everything goes to hell. Sucked into the citys corrupt underworld, theyre all looking for a way out of the trouble theyve instigated, driven by loss and fueled by a desperate need to escape the dangerous threat that looms over them. They careen madly in the face of the poison of power, sexual violence, murder, betrayals. Little Rot tests how far these five will go to save each otheror themselveswhen confronted by evil, culminating in a shattering denouement. With each novel, with each creation, Akwaeke Emezi shows their genius as a storyteller, as a visionary force who has created a thrilling tale of sex, power, and deviance in Little Rot. You wont be able to look away.

I really have to stop just buying books. This Emezi book is NOT for me. I normally love their work but I am only about 30 pages in and I hate everything about it. There is a lot of sexual abuse going on. I think it could have worked if there was more of a lead in but I just feel gross reading it.

Texreader Maybe the title says it all! 🧐 2d
ChaoticMissAdventures @Texreader maybe this time... But her Bitter was ironically very sweet. There was a bit of periphery badness but , this one ... Not the same. 2d

Another book I read during my summer vacation

Aima and Kalu has just broken up, and Kalu has driven Aima to the airport so she can get back to London. Aima changes her mind and contacts a friend. Kalu contacts his best friend. They‘re all in for a weekend that will change them for ever. For Lagos isn‘t what it seem, when you start scratching, it‘s full of sex parties, blackmail, cover ups and murder.

Delayed post but here‘s what I got from the Brooklyn Book Festival! Two free books (the poet X and the sweetest fruits), one indigenous (birdie), one in translation (exposed) and one from an author I want to read everything by (Little rot)!

Going away this weekend so hopefully I get through some books! I‘ve got The Sweetest fruits and my kindle with me. 😊

Jari-chan Acevedo - what a delight! 9mo
