7 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
The long-awaited penultimate volume--"the very summit of Proust's art" (Slate)--in the acclaimed Penguin translation of Marcel Proust's greatest work, in time for the 150th anniversary of his birth "The greatest literary work of the twentieth century." --The New York Times A Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition, with flaps and deckle-edged paper Peter Collier's acclaimed translation of The Fugitive introduces a new generation of American readers to the literary riches of Marcel Proust. The sixth and penultimate volume in Penguin Classics' superb new edition of In Search of Lost Time--the first completely new translation of Proust's masterpiece since the 1920s--brings us a more comic and lucid prose than readers of English have previously been able to enjoy. "Miss Albertine has left!" So begins The Fugitive, the second part of what is often referred to as "the Albertine cycle," or books five and six of In Search of Lost Time. As Marcel struggles to endure Albertine's departure and vanquish his loss, he ends up in an anguished search for the essential truth of the enigmatic fugitive, whose love affairs with other women provoke in him jealousy and a new understanding of sexuality. Eventually, he lets go of Albertine and begins to find himself, discovering his own long-lost inner sources of creativity. For more than seventy-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 2,000 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

I loved it, but I had to read it like a possessed person to get through it.... Actually that‘s how it has been for me with all of Proust.

As usual with these editions, the translator's intro in the beginning is excellent.

Some of this installment is like a fever dream; a new type of Proust. Fantasies and dreams and memories flood the reader. The prose is incredible as always, the observations revelatory. I also gasped audibly at one part.

quote
Taylor

For old age removes the ability to act, but not to desire. It is only in a third phase that those who live to a great age renounce desire, after being obliged to abandon action. They no longer stand for such petty elections as that of President of the Republic, where they so often formerly strove to succeed. They are content merely to go out, to eat, and to read the newspapers. They have outlived themselves.

I‘m halfway through this!

Really liking it so far. It‘s somewhat easy to follow and, like the previous volume, not crammed with characters to keep track of.

I can‘t believe I‘ve come this far in Proust…. The prose is filled with revelations (which I‘ve grown used to but is still heavily impressive), and I‘m fully in his world. I‘m reading this like a person possessed.

In the Norwegian translation this is the next to last book in Proust massive work. So this far into In Search of Lost Times, you know what to expect writing wise.

This starts with Albertine leaving a note to our protagonist which says that she‘s leaving him. We then get ideas about people change according to who they are with and how the Albertine he misses isn‘t the only Albertine that exists.

On this raining autumn day I finally finished another Proust.
In between the typical, endless meandering sentences, there does happen a lot in this 6th book of In Search of Lost Time. Albertine loses much of her magic when Marcel learns more about her after she falls from a horse. He feels finally free to visit Venice with his mother. Also he meets Gilberte again, on the brink of yet another unhappy marriage, of which the series has a lot!

Liz_M Captive/Fugitive were the weakest part of this story. The last volume has some stunning writing, as good or better than the best bits in the first volume! 5y
BarbaraBB @Liz_M That is good to know! I‘ll start it next month and will read about 50 pages a month so a year from now I will be finished. I think my next 1001 project then will be 5y
thebluestocking This is highly impressive. I have the first four volumes but haven‘t read past the first chapter of volume one! 5y

BarbaraBB @thebluestocking It took me almost three years to get this far 😄 5y
jveezer I love Proust and am on the middle of a reread with the recent English translations. I‘m on Sodom & Gomorrah, which is the last one of the new translations available in the USA due to copyright, so I‘ll have to find used copies that someone bought in Europe to finish the cycle... 5y
BarbaraBB @jveezer I‘m reading them in Dutch or I would have send you my copies! 5y
thebluestocking @jveezer I didn‘t know the rest of the translations were done but not available in the US! I‘ll have to hunt down the others. 5y
Ruthiella BOOK SIX! Amazing - you‘re almost done. I‘ve always been daunted by these books. I had to read Swan in Love for a French lit class in college but I kinda just skimmed it unfortunately. Bad student! 5y
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella I have skimmed some parts too. That‘s unavoidable with Proust I think 😂 5y

Sometime last fall, high on cappuccino and the wisdom of Pippi Longstocking (I've never tried that before, so I'm sure I'm good at it), I offered to embroider 2 (!) Norwegian national costumes from my region (sunnmørsbunad). Now I just have to practice and learn how... all I can say is thank God for Audible 😅🙈 At the right you see today's practice, at the left what the finished product should look like.

Karkar I love Norwegian National Costumes. It is so interesting to see all the different ones! 6y
BookInMyHands Wow! Good for you! I hope you‘ll keep posting what you create while you listen. Audiobooks are what get me to work-out in the morning, but no one wants to see that 🤣 6y
HannaPolkadots @Karkar - glad to hear it! I love them too, and always feel sort of proud when I get to wear it 😊 Do you have a favorite? 6y

HannaPolkadots @BookInMyHands - the posting will continue!👍😀 6y
Karkar @HannaPolkadots I really like the one that my cousin has. She is from Norway and I feel bad because I cannot remember what region it is for. It is a pretty blue color with red flowers. I will have to see if I can find my picture. 6y
DivineDiana I love embroidery. Cheers to you! 6y
