Anniversaries
Anniversaries: From a Year in the Life of Gesine Cresspahl | Uwe Johnson
59 posts | 6 read | 8 to read
A landmark of 20th Century literature about New York in the late 1960s, now in English for the first time. As a novel, Uwe Johnson's masterpiece, Anniversaries, is at once daringly simple in conception and wonderfully complex and engaging in effect. Late in 1967, Johnson, already one of the most celebrated German novelists of his generation, set out to write a book that would take the form of an entry for every day of the year that lay ahead. The first section was dated August 20, and Johnson had of course no idea what the year would bring--that was part of the challenge--but he did have his main character--Gesine Cresspahl, a German emigre living on the Upper West Side of New York City and working as a translator for a bank who is the single mother of a ten-year-old daughter, Marie. The book would tell the story of a year in the life of this little family in relation to the unfolding story of the year, as winnowed from the pages of the New York Times, of which Gesine is a devoted if wary reader. These stories would in turn be overlayed by another--Gesine is 34, born just as Hitler was coming to power, and she has decided to tell Marie the story of her grandparents' lives and of her own rural childhood in Nazi Germany. It is important that Marie know where and what she comes from. The days of the year are also anniversaries of years past. The world that was and the world of the 1960s--with the struggle for civil rights leading to riots in American cities and, abroad, the escalating destruction of the Vietnam War--are, in the end, one world. Anniversaries was published in four volumes over the more than ten years that it took Johnson to write it, and as the volumes came out it became clear that this was one the great twentieth-century novels. The book courts comparison to Joyce's Ulysses, the book of a day, and to Proust's In Search of Lost Time, the book of a lifetime, but it stands apart in its dense polyphonic interplay of voices and stories. Anniversaries is many books--the book of a mother and daughter, of a family and its generations, of the country and the city, and of two times and two countries that seem farther apart perhaps than they are. It is a novel of private life, a political novel, and a new kind of historical novel, reckoning not only with past history but with history in the making. Monumental and intimate, sweeping in vision and full of incident, richly detailed and endlessly absorbing, Anniversaries, now for the first time available in English in a brilliant new translation by Damion Searls, is nothing short of a revelation.

80 hrs of reading over 11 months 🙂

Gesine Cresspahl‘s diary, generally in 3rd person, is half present day New York City, August 1967 to August 1968, peppered with NYTimes headlines. And half her childhood in Germany before, during and after WW2…and she was on the other side of the Iron Curtain, in the eastern GDR. An odd love/hate to lonely capitalist NYC, and an ode to survival in and, to the ghosts of, eastern Germany. #uwe

Graywacke Pictured is Riverside Drive and park along the west side of Manhattan. Uwe placed Gesine on Riverside and 96th Street. 2y
Suet624 This sounds daunting but I bet I would love it. Maybe a goal during my ‘retirement‘ 2y
Graywacke @Suet624 it‘s just long. 🙂 Not daunting, like difficult, just that it never seems to be getting anywhere. If you love NYC, than I suspect it‘s a special book, focusing in NYT headlines and Riverside Drive, west of Central Park. I really embraced that aspect. (edited) 2y
Suet624 Hmmm.. I have just a marginal interest in NYC so maybe not for me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ didn‘t know it was so focused on that. 2y

I finished Part 3, the shortest of the 4 volumes. Narrated in April-May-June 1968 New York, with the assassination of Robert Kennedy told through its press lens on TV and in the New York Times. With the backstory now in post-WWII Soviet Germany. What does a communist country do when it conquers a wealthy capitalist country? It‘s a very strange story. The first two parts were easier reads. History is just a little too messy here. #Uwe

I finished the 2nd book, so half way home, but also a month behind my year plan.

Bk2 has changes from Bk1. It‘s more distinctly Gesine‘s voice, but at the cost of much of the eerie feel of this climactic time, which he created by paraphrasing the NY Times. (An unfortunate cost) Also it covers all of WW2, so the backstory takes priority over the then contemporary NYC, excepting MLK‘s assassination. I did get really into it eventually.
#Uwe

BarbaraBB I am sorry to hear it‘s a bit disappointing 2y
Graywacke @BarbaraBB hi. Been thinking about you after seeing your post. Uwe put a lot into volume 1 to make it more than a story. The present and past and the ghosts of the past blend together creating a kind of atmosphere that I thought was special. He hasn‘t done that here so far. It‘s much more direct. So…no atmosphere yet. 😐 2y

I finished part I of this 1700 page book following a child of Nazi Germany living in New York City in 1967, a single mother, a professional in a giant bank building, living on Riverside Drive in Manhattan with her ten-yr-old daughter and no other family, but some Jewish heritage and many ghosts. While reading I had one day in NYC and we walked around a lot from Central Park to Columbia University. It felt to me like a city still in 1967. 👇👇

Graywacke The book mixes in daily news headlines as presented in the New York Times (Vietnam, crime, riots, an interview of Stalin‘s daughter)with Gesine‘s life in 1967, with the stories she tells her daughter of her parents in 1930‘s Germany and the politics of their small town, with the ghost voices in her head. It‘s oddly directionless and captivating at the same time. 3y

Books that I aim to read and conquer this year. In the past two weeks, I have not read much as I have gone through a four stage process to secure an English teaching job. I sincerely hope I have enough time to read these books whilst working .

vivastory This sounds interesting.. 3y
BarbaraBB Yes, I‘d love to! I‘ve been meaning to read it for a long time. Thanks for asking! @emilyhaldi @vivastory are you in as well? 3y
vivastory @BarbaraBB Count me in! I'm going to order a copy 📚 3y
See All 37 Comments
BarbaraBB @vivastory Nice! I just did too. Great idea Jennifer! 3y
JenniferP @BarbaraBB @vivastory Excellent! I'm so happy to have some company! I'm much more comfortable on LT, so we'll have to talk about how to best do a group read on litsy. 3y
vivastory @JenniferP @BarbaraBB I'm also on LT (infrequent user). We can use that for the main discussion if you would like. 3y
BarbaraBB @JenniferP @vivastory I‘m okay with both! I don‘t think @emilyhaldi is on LT but she just had a baby and won‘t have much time to read I guess. 3y
JenniferP @BarbaraBB @vivastory I had asked on LT in the 1001 books group if anyone would like to read this and didn't get any takers, but maybe I'll bump it up. If we get some interest there we could use LT and if not I'm willing to try litsy. On Litsy, would we just periodically make a post and tag each other as we read and have comments?
3y
vivastory @JenniferP @BarbaraBB Sounds good. I think that periodic posts with tagging each other would be a good idea. Maybe at the end of the month we could exchange our thoughts on the book for that particular month? General impression for the month etc 3y
BarbaraBB @vivastory @JenniferP That sounds good to me. Looking forward to it! 3y
Graywacke Interested 🙋🏻‍♂️ - but it might be an overly optimistic interest considering what else i plan to read. 3y
vivastory @Graywacke You should join! 3y
JenniferP @Graywacke @BarbaraBB @vivastory - we'd love to have you! I looked at the book and there are 4 volumes. They aren't even in pages, but roughly 400-450 each. I think matching those volumes up with 3 month chunks of the year would work well. Keeps it a pretty loose schedule. I've had a couple people on LT express loose interest as well, so I'm thinking of starting a thread in the 1001 books group. I'm happy to discuss on both litsy and LT! 3y
BarbaraBB @Graywacke Yay Dan, It would be great to have you join us! It seems not too hard if I hear you @JenniferP I hope my copy will be delivered soon. I know @Liz_M read it, maybe she can tell us what to expect! 3y
Liz_M It's is not difficult at all -- just long. It should be easy to break up as it is structured in daily entries (Aug 21, 1967 - Aug 20, 1968). I think it is better read in larger chunks, which help the flow given the jumping around in two main storylines and the plethora of narrators. Also, as Americans with not a strong grounding in European history, as you near the end of the novel check out the historical significance of the end date. 3y
JenniferP @Liz_M good to know! Fair warning to all - I often end up reading faster than planned once I get in a groove with a book, but I will stay on the discussion pace. And thanks for the tip about the end date - I'll look into it! I will definitely like a group to help each other with the European history. Feel free, all, to tag anyone else on litsy who might be interested! 3y
Graywacke @vivastory @BarbaraBB - I think you convinced me. I‘ll hunt down a copy today. @Liz_M Good info. Thanks! (edited) 3y
emilyhaldi Thanks for thinking of me!!! I would love to join this read along but @BarbaraBB is right that this new little baby has taken up a bit of my time these days 🙃 I also start a new job on 1/5 so that doesn‘t help matters. Keep me posted once you get started and I‘ll see if I can swing it! 🤞🏻 3y
BarbaraBB @emilyhaldi We will, no pressure! Is little Hank doing good? Are you enjoying motherhood? 3y
JenniferP @emilyhaldi we'd love you to join, but I get it on being a new mom plus new job! We'll keep you tagged when we start. 3y
arubabookwoman I will join in the group read whether on Litsy or LT, and will attempt not to drop out, though I'm usually pretty bad at following through with things like this. I already have the multivolume set on my shelf, and started it once in the past. (At the same time Liz did). 3y
vivastory @JenniferP @BarbaraBB I have been thinking about it & I think I'm going to need to bow out of the group read. I have a lot going on right now & not sure that a year long commitment would be a good idea for me. Sorry! I will definitely be following your posts with interest. 3y
BarbaraBB I am sorry to hear that @vivastory but you should take care of yourself and not do things that feel obligatory 🤍. (edited) 3y
BarbaraBB @arubabookwoman Happy You‘re joining Deborah! I‘m not as disciplined as Jennifer either (Proust took me 3 years) but I‘m excited to try! 3y
JenniferP @vivastory totally understand! I always get excited about group reads but sometimes when I think about actually getting down to doing it I realize it's too much. Hope you'll still follow along a bit and maybe you'll get to it some other time! 3y
JenniferP @BarbaraBB @graywacke @arubabookwoman Next question is if we'd like our main posts to be on litsy or LT? I did have two LTers who don't do litsy express a little interest in following along. If we did LT, I would still post about Anniversaires at the end of each quarter on litsy to make sure we aren't leaving anyone out. Thoughts? 3y
bnp @JenniferP I'm on LT more than Litsy, but can do either. my question is, are we doing weekly discussions? Once a month? Just posting as we go? (I would like some structure where I'm accountable to show up, otherwise I get distracted by shiny new things. ) 3y
BarbaraBB @JenniferP Let‘s do both indeed. I know Dan, Deborah, you and @bnp are active on LT. I prefer Litsy but I can follow along on LT too of course! Thanks Jennifer! (edited) 3y
Graywacke @BarbaraBB I like this idea. 3y
Graywacke @bnp ok, I don‘t have the book yet and haven‘t 100% committed yet, but for what it‘s worth I‘m in favor of more structure over less. (Also, I‘m in favor of a lazy pace, if that‘s an option. But ok regardless, as long as i can manage it.) 3y
BarbaraBB Like @Graywacke I‘m in favor of a lazy pace 😀 but I think your proposal to read a volume each 3 months seems pretty relaxed! 3y
bnp I'd like a slow pace too - I took 1700 pages & divided by 48 weeks & came up with 35 pages/week with a few weeks in there for I -didn't-get -to -it-this-week. Is that doable? 3y
Graywacke @bnp i think so. (I ordered a copy today. My boxed set should arrive the 1st week of January.) 3y
JenniferP I will start a thread somewhere on LT at some point this week and provide a link here when it's up. There are lots of options for pacing. You could do one day per day since it's a daily journal, though they differ in length. I will aim to finish one volume per quarter, likely reading in bursts and then taking breaks rather than doing 4-5 pages per day, but any of the above will keep us in roughly the same place to discuss. 3y
emilyhaldi @BarbaraBB Hank is great and we had a good rhythm going!…then he hit 4 months and things went haywire 🤪 he‘s not loving naps recently & with holiday activities reading has been a struggle. Hoping we get things somewhat back on schedule before I start work next week 🤞🏻hope you and your family are doing well and enjoying the holidays!!! ❤️ 3y
BarbaraBB @emilyhaldi A rhythm is a must for working mothers but it‘s hard to keep it going. My daughter didn‘t nap during the day, that was hell 🥴. Good luck with work. Are you looking forward to it or is it hard to leave little Hank? 3y
emilyhaldi @BarbaraBB ugh, the no napping is brutal 😑 I‘m feeling very sad to leave Hank for the new job, and stressed about balancing everything, but trying to be positive 😅 3y

BarbaraBB Happy birthday 🎈 Is Anniversaries your long read this year? 4y
JenniferP @BarbaraBB I think I might save it for next year. Or at least the fall when my kids will hopefully be back in school. I don‘t think I can handle a long read this year with the kids still in virtual school at home! 4y
BarbaraBB That‘s probably a wise decision! Maybe I‘ll join you next year. I‘ve been fascinated by this one since @Liz_M read it and of course it‘s 1001. 4y
JenniferP @BarbaraBB that would be great! I love to have a year long group read. Let‘s remember to talk about it in the fall. And, yes, @Liz_M got me intrigued as well! 4y
Liz_M Yay! 🙌 And you're welcome @BarbaraBB, @JenniferP 😁 4y
BarbaraBB Will do! Maybe @emilyhaldi will like to join too, I think I remember she has a copy of the books as well! However, the fall is a long time away! 🍂 (edited) 4y
emilyhaldi @BarbaraBB Thanks for thinking of me!! I do have a copy of Anniversaries and would love to do a read along. I may never pick it up on my own otherwise ... 😅 4y
JenniferP @emilyhaldi @BarbaraBB great! I will need time to gear up, but I‘ll start getting in the right frame of mind to read it next year. 4y

Yesterday was my 4th #Litsyversary! 🎉

My first Litsy post ⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️

I haven't been on here much lately unfortunately but I've still been reading! It's fun to browse to get some reading ideas and, of course, cram in all the book content I can!

Pickpick

Told in 366 chapters, from 8/21/ 1967-8/20/1968, this epic novel details the daily life of Gesine Cresspahl, a German exile in New York City, weaving mundane details as Gesine recounts life in Nazi-Soviet-East Germany from 1940-1960s to her daughter. It‘s a fabulous work with a huge cast that clearly moves back and forth between timelines. The length may be daunting, but it‘s not difficult. I am going to miss Gesine, Marie, and their love of NYC.

TrishB Great review, stacked 👍🏻 will wait for an offer though as it‘s expensive! 4y
Liz_M @TrishB Well, it is 1668 pages 😆 4y

It is done. I've read the last daily entry dated August 20, 1968.

emilyhaldi How did you like it?? I have these in my shelf but haven't been brave enough to start 😅 4y
Liz_M @emilyhaldi I enjoyed it very much! It is written in dated entries from Aug 21, 1967 to Aug 20, 1968. I was trying to read an entry a day, but it flowed better reading a week's worth of entries at once. It'd be better not spread out over an entire year. There are two timelines: Gesine's 1967 daily life in NYC collaged with info from NYTimes and her life story in Nazi-Soviet-East-Germany from 1940s-1960s as she tells it to her 10-year-old daughter. 4y
BarbaraBB You did it. And it does sound good! Great picture too. I want to read all the titles 😀. 4y

Today is my 4-year #Litsyversary! Thanks to all you wonderful Littens, I went from being lucky if I read 30 books in a year, to reading more than 150 each year. You all inspire me to keep reading even when I feel down, and you‘ve blown up my TBR and my bookcases. I blame you for the 10 bookcases I‘ve bought and the stacks of books I still can‘t fit on the shelves! I couldn‘t be more grateful. 💖💖

May reads: continuing with Anniversaries, of course.
The Golden Notebook is also on the go.
How We Fight for Our Lives is my bookclub's rescheduled March book, as the meeting was supposed to be on the day NYC started to close down.
Homo Faber is for #ReadingEurope2020
As Man Grows Older is for the #Reading1001 TBR challenge.
And The Gate is for a GR group translations project

sisilia I loved The Gate 😍 Enjoy! 5y

#BookReport: Very exciting news: I have started volume 2 of the tagged book!

The Golden Notebook continues and Forest of the Hanged was recently begun (for #ReadingEurope2020), replacing Augie March, which is being set aside as too much of a slog right now. I will begin Hide and Seek (for #nyrbbookclub) later in the week.

merelybookish Wow! Some ambitious reads! 5y

My tentative, overly ambitious March reading plans. If the weight of these tomes doesn't kill me, of course. (Also, not pictured is Basti).

Graywacke moi? 😇 (but, really, such a beautiful stack of titles) 5y

I finished 1919.

This will come as a surprise, but I'm still reading Anniversaries. I've started Irretrievable, but due to a day off and a miserable cold I am likely to devour Obelisk Gate instead. Also downloaded Pursuit of Love in an attempt to read something from the 1001 list rather than an epic Sci-fi trilogy.

#WeeklyForcast

BarbaraBB Of course you‘re still reading Anniversaries. Do you enjoy it? I must get to Irretrievable too but I scanned through and am still not in the mood for it. Next week I guess... 5y

I am trying to get caught up to today's date in the tagged book. I've started 42 Parallel and now that I have it as an ebook it will be my subway read. Finished the other two books.
