The Emperor and the Endless Palace
The Emperor and the Endless Palace: A Romantasy Novel | Justinian Huang
7 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
What if I told you that the feeling we call love is actually the feeling of metaphysical recognition, when your soul remembers someone from a previous life? In the year 4 BCE, an ambitious courtier is called upon to seduce the young emperorbut quickly discovers they are both ruled by blood, sex and intrigue. In 1740, a lonely innkeeper agrees to help a mysterious visitor procure a rare medicine, only to unleash an otherworldly terror instead. And in present-day Los Angeles, a college student meets a beautiful stranger and cannot shake the feeling theyve met before. Across these seemingly unrelated timelines woven together only by the twists and turns of fate, two men are reborn, lifetime after lifetime. Within the treacherous walls of an ancient palace and the boundless forests of the Asian wilderness to the heart-pounding cement floors of underground rave scenes, our lovers are inexplicably drawn to each other, constantly tested by the worlds around them. As their many lives intertwine, they begin to realize the power of their undying lovea power that transcends time itselfbut one that might consume them both. An unpredictable roller coaster of a debut novel, The Emperor and the Endless Palace is a genre-bending romantasy that challenges everything we think we know about true love.

Mixed feelings. I wanted to finish it (I did) as it was a debut author. On and off trouble, though, following three timelines and how they correlated. At 55%, it started making more sense. It‘s of these two men, cursed to get back together, let alone their cheater followed them. I‘m not sure how I‘d explain the book. Let alone the many sexual encounters, intentional and not. Off putting to me-starts with a lot. Gay romance across lifetimes

Colorful, lush, evocative storytelling that twists and turns—at the heart of which is a fantastical love between two men, a love that spans lifetimes and realities. Really intricate weaving of themes and storylines that‘s energized by a curse and an adventure. I was surprised and delighted by this debut and this author is now officially on my must-buy list. Also, the audiobook adds so much context to the story. It‘s a must listen! 5🌟

Pickpick

Magic and reincarnation surround a pair of queer lovers through three eras of Chinese history, beginning with Emperor AI and his male lover, Dong Xian, an innkeeper and a kitsune during the 1700's, and a two men attending a rave in the modern world. Told with a danmei (Chinese male pairings) lyrical style but added with an extra dose of spice, this will appease M/M romance readers who want a little more.

3/5

Three timelines from ancient China to modern LA that tell a love story that plays out across reincarnations.

There are so many motifs that are repeated through the three timelines. I think this is a book that needs multiple reads to catch everything.

I think I might have liked this a little more if it hadn't been marketed as a romance. It's definitely a fantasy love story,. I read the ending as hopeful, but it's open to interpretation.
