Bad Therapy: Why the Kids Aren't Growing Up | Abigail Shrier
2 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
From the author of Irreversible Damage, an investigation into how mental health overdiagnosis is harming, not helping, children In virtually every way that can be measured, Gen Z's mental health is worse than that of previous generations. Youth suicide rates are climbing, antidepressant prescriptions for children are common, and the proliferation of mental health diagnoses has not helped the staggering number of kids who are lonely, lost, sad and fearful of growing up. What's gone wrong? In Bad Therapy, bestselling investigative journalist Abigail Shrier argues that the problem isn't the kids it's the mental health experts. Drawing on hundreds of interviews with child psychologists, parents, teachers and young people themselves, Shrier explores the ways the mental health industry has transformed the way we teach, treat, discipline and even talk to our kids. She reveals that most of the therapeutic approaches have serious side effects and few proven benefits: for instance, talk therapy can induce rumination, trapping children in cycles of anxiety and depression; while 'gentle parenting' can encourage emotional turbulence even violence in children as they lash out, desperate for an adult to be in charge. Mental health care can be lifesaving when properly applied to children with severe needs, but for the typical child, the cure can be worse than the disease. Bad Therapy is a must-read for anyone questioning why our efforts to support our kids have backfired and what it will take for parents to lead a turnaround.

Mehso-so

This book made some interesting points but the first few chapters just struck me as ‘alarmist‘ journalism. Lots of generalisations and cherry picking data. I thought the anti therapy argument was a bit flawed. However, I totally agreed with the sentiment that helicopter parenting is doing children more harm than good. And somewhat agreed that not everything is a ‘trauma‘. It is sometimes just part of life. Teaching kids resilience is a good thing

Pickpick

I‘m sure this book is considered controversial in some circles but I thought it was spot on. Of course, my opinion is based on the fact that I raised a son as a single parent, and practiced what the book would call “authoritative parenting.” My son is now a sensible 42-year-old man with two well-adjusted kids and a loving wife. So, when I read a book that affirms my parenting style, what‘s not to like? As they say "the proof is in the pudding." ⬇️

Shrier argues that the industry is causing harm rather than providing healing. She presents evidence that Gen Z‘s mental health is deteriorating, with rising youth suicide rates and widespread antidepressant prescriptions. ⬇️ 8mo

5feet.of.fury Oooh interesting! I suspect I would probably be reading this with some confirmation bias just looking at the blurb but… it sounds really interesting 8mo
suvata @5feet.of.fury I thought it was a great book. I often like to read books that challenge my beliefs but, surprisingly, this one affirmed them. 😀 8mo
