Absolutely no clue who Rex Chapman was, and forgot how this landed on my radar (just saw @Megabooks ‘ review and tag so that‘s definitely it!) but what a pleasant surprise! Rex is just fabulous, though he‘s been through it! A UK basketball legend who made it to the NBA after racism soured his experience with Kentucky. A riches to rags story: an opioid addiction and hitting rock bottom. But he found a way out and has a big presence on X.

Megabooks It‘s so funny…he came up with one of Dad‘s aides, who is a guy the same age as Rex, and I guess knew him as a teen. He called Rex “spoiled”. 😂😂 I wonder if there‘s still a giant photo of him in my high school gym?? 2mo
Chelsea.Poole @Megabooks I have no other point of reference, but according to Rex in the audiobook he‘s pretty divisive there! 2mo

So this memoir is a bit special to me. Rex is from my hometown and graduated from my high school about 10 years before I did. Every day I saw his picture above the gym held up as one of Kentucky‘s finest playing basketball for UK and then the NBA. He lays bare NCAA corruption and racism. Unfortunately, opiate and gambling addiction caused him arrests and problems in his marriage and family life. Slowly he has rebuilt it sober. Loved this one!

Megabooks Oh and his coauthor wrote for the same college newspaper I did about 10 years before my time there. Crazy coincidence! 13mo
Chelsea.Poole Totally not on my radar and I don‘t usually go for sports memoirs but I can‘t resist a Meg approved memoir, so on the list it goes 😊 13mo
RebL Six degrees of Rex Chapman! He‘s the only reason I ever visit formerly known as Twitter. 13mo

Megabooks @Chelsea.Poole I‘m not sure whether it‘s my connection to the subject, but it‘s short and interesting. A quick listen! 13mo
Megabooks @RebL I did not know he was such an X influencer! Happy for him that he‘s found that and is doing positive things with it. 13mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB it is. It was really nice to read about my hometown and high school. 13mo
Chelsea.Poole Thanks so much for the recommendation for this one. (10 months ago 😆) I really enjoyed Rex‘s story and openness about his struggles. Realizing your connections to him and the coauthor make it even better. Hope you‘re doing ok, thinking of you! 2mo
