It's Hard for Me to Live with Me: A Memoir
It's Hard for Me to Live with Me: A Memoir | Seth Davis, Rex Chapman
2 posts | 2 read
A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A powerful memoir from the University of Kentucky basketball legend, NBA veteran, and social media influencer about his recovery from addiction. He is considered by many the greatest basketball player ever produced by the hoops-crazy state of Kentucky. In two years at the University of Kentucky, he scored over 1,000 points, led the Wildcats to a Sweet Sixteen appearance and was nicknamed "King Rex." The first player ever drafted by the Charlotte Hornets, he spent twelve seasons in the NBA, dazzling in dunk contests and sinking one of the most memorable buzzer-beaters in league history. But by the end of his career, Rex Chapman was harboring a destructive secret. Years before America's opioid crisis would become national news, Chapman developed a dependency on Vicodin and Oxycontin, ultimately ingesting fifty painkillers a day. In addition, he developed a severe gambling addiction, once nearly losing $400,000 at a Las Vegas blackjack table. All this would cost him his family as well as most of the $40 million fortune he'd made in basketball, leaving him to live in his car and shoplift to support his addictions. Only when he was arrested--and his mugshot made national news--did he finally commit to getting clean. In It's Hard for Me to Live With Me, Chapman--who has amassed millions of social media followers for his relatable and uplifting posts--tells the story of his addiction and recovery in unflinching detail. With equal frankness, he describes his history with depression; the racism he witnessed growing up and how that shaped his outspokenness on matters of social justice; and his complex and volatile relationship with his father, also a former professional basketball player. Cowritten with New York Times bestselling author Seth Davis, Chapman's memoir is an equally devastating and inspiring story about the human struggle for self-acceptance.

Absolutely no clue who Rex Chapman was, and forgot how this landed on my radar (just saw @Megabooks ‘ review and tag so that‘s definitely it!) but what a pleasant surprise! Rex is just fabulous, though he‘s been through it! A UK basketball legend who made it to the NBA after racism soured his experience with Kentucky. A riches to rags story: an opioid addiction and hitting rock bottom. But he found a way out and has a big presence on X.

Megabooks It‘s so funny…he came up with one of Dad‘s aides, who is a guy the same age as Rex, and I guess knew him as a teen. He called Rex “spoiled”. 😂😂 I wonder if there‘s still a giant photo of him in my high school gym?? 6h

So this memoir is a bit special to me. Rex is from my hometown and graduated from my high school about 10 years before I did. Every day I saw his picture above the gym held up as one of Kentucky‘s finest playing basketball for UK and then the NBA. He lays bare NCAA corruption and racism. Unfortunately, opiate and gambling addiction caused him arrests and problems in his marriage and family life. Slowly he has rebuilt it sober. Loved this one!

Megabooks Oh and his coauthor wrote for the same college newspaper I did about 10 years before my time there. Crazy coincidence! 10mo
Chelsea.Poole Totally not on my radar and I don‘t usually go for sports memoirs but I can‘t resist a Meg approved memoir, so on the list it goes 😊 10mo
RebL Six degrees of Rex Chapman! He‘s the only reason I ever visit formerly known as Twitter. 10mo

Megabooks @Chelsea.Poole I‘m not sure whether it‘s my connection to the subject, but it‘s short and interesting. A quick listen! 10mo
Megabooks @RebL I did not know he was such an X influencer! Happy for him that he‘s found that and is doing positive things with it. 10mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB it is. It was really nice to read about my hometown and high school. 10mo
Chelsea.Poole Thanks so much for the recommendation for this one. (10 months ago 😆) I really enjoyed Rex‘s story and openness about his struggles. Realizing your connections to him and the coauthor make it even better. Hope you‘re doing ok, thinking of you! 10h
