It was quite controversial at the time of its release--an uncompromising work that transgressed Victorian boundaries between public and private life, and lines of race, gender, and society.

WOW. The autobiography of Mary Todd Lincoln‘s dressmaker: born a slave, bought her freedom (and her son‘s), then became a seamstress for many famous political wives and daughters of the time. This is a first hand account of life in the Lincoln White House and the financial drama that followed Mrs Lincoln after the assassination. These were fairly scandalous revealings about the First Lady during this time in society. Easy reading. I recommend it.

so-so

This memoir included both excerpts and complete letters from historical figures like Mary Todd Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Keckley admits she‘s sharing things not meant to be shared, but only because the truth needs to be known so her peers will think better of Mrs. Lincoln...and Keckley by association. 🤔🤔🤔🤔
