Can you flimflam a ghost? Its 1934. Former medium Dashiel Quicke travels the country debunking spiritualism and false mediums while struggling to stay ahead of his ex-business partner and lover who wants him back at any cost. During a demonstration at a college campus, Dashiel meets Hermann Goschalk, an Egyptologist whos convinced that he has a genuine haunted artifact on his hands. Certain there is a rational explanation for whatever is going on with Hermanns relics, Dashiel would rather skip town, but soon finds himself falling for Hermann. He agrees to take a look after all and learns that something is haunting Hermanns office indeed. Faced with a real ghost Dashiel is terrified, but when the haunting takes a dangerous turn, he must use the tools of the shady trade he left behind to communicate with this otherworldly spirit before his past closes in. For readers who enjoy A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske, The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune, and Malice by Heather Walter

I woke up to a scary email about changes to my train back to Paris. I rushed over to the station at 10:00 to resolve it, but the office didn‘t open until 10:30 so I killed time in this nice little park.

The staff tell me there‘s no issue with my seat, no matter what the email says, but I‘m still gonna worry until I‘m actually on the TGV.

In other news, THE SHABTI is great! Interesting characters, strong horror elements, solid conflict.

tpixie 😅🍀 🇫🇷 4d
Dilara Oh dear! I hope the staff was right... 4d
xicanti @Dilara they were wrong. I ended up having to go back there after lunch, but now I have a 2nd class seat facing backwards instead of the 1st class forward-facing seat I booked weeks ago. I‘m not impressed, either with SNCF‘s decision to shrink the train or with the early staff‘s failure to check on that. 4d

So, it turns out the restaurants of Tours mostly don‘t open until 18:00 or 18:30. I NEEDED food, so I had another half a baguette and some salmon salad someone left in the cupboard.

I also have language fatigue. My written comprehension is great, but my aural stinks, and I‘m tired of always being embarrassed and ashamed because I can‘t understand people. I‘m just gonna hole up inside and be kinda hungry with this historical mystery.

Ruthiella Yeah, oral comprehension is tough! It comes with time, but when one is in the country for a short period… 5d
tpixie Yes! I wish everybody talked with captions over their heads! I can read French better than understand them when they‘re talking!!! 💬💬💬 5d
xicanti @Ruthiella yep. Sigh. 4d
xicanti @tpixie I wish this ALL THE TIME. When I watch French shows and movies, I put the French subtitles on and it makes life so much easier. 4d
