61 AD & Centurions Sempronius Densus & Claudius Faventinus are tasked with accompanying Tribune Curtius Lupus on a fact-finding mission for the Emperor. Nero wants them to find the source of the Nile river to give Rome the upper hand. They know they will be facing hazardous terrain, wild beasts, & possibly unfriendly people, but none of them can envisage the Herculean task it will turn out to be.

OutsmartYourShelf This is loosely based on a true story, Nero really did send men to find the Nile's source, although some of the main characters are fictional. I usually really enjoy Simon Turney's books but I didn't click with this one & I'm not entirely sure why. The two main characters, Densus & Faventinus, are pretty much what you would expect centurions to be: 2mo
OutsmartYourShelf gruff disciplinarians, a bit rough around the edges, & balancing loyalty to the men with their oath to the Emperor. There was just that vital 'something' missing for me. 3.5🌟

TWs: death, murder, violence, suicide, animal death, strong language.

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Aria & Aries, for the opportunity to read an ARC.
