I loved Dean‘s debut, so I‘ve been excited for this one since first hearing about it! It‘s a dark book— moving, heartbreaking & slowly riveting as the story unfolds Isabelle & Edward‘s life together. It feels inspired by the real case of the Golden State Killer, but this book isn‘t really about the violent perpetrator & more about the aftermath & impact violence has on their lives & their relationship. Slow at first, but unputdownable by the end!
I don‘t think I loved this as much as many early reviewers, but it *is* very good. Like the author‘s previous two books it takes a horrific situation but deals more with the emotions around it, rather than explicitly covering the crime / event itself. (Doesn‘t mean it‘s not scary as hell though!) 😧 😱
Isabel and Edward suffered a terrible crime and are now forced to confront what happened to their relationship then, and in the decades since.
This is such a powerfull and deeply moving story. It takes a different look to a crime and really focuses on the aftermath. Especially when there is no instant capture. We truly see the pain and suffering that can be caused. Its heavy going at times and yet so well written. You read about cases in the press and online but never think about just how reaching a trauma like that can be. This is told by both Isabel and Edward. #Netgalley 5*
