Sara Trevelyan was independent, clever, and privileged: a doctor who campaigned for penal reform. She fell in love with and married Jimmy Boyle, a convicted murderer who had become a famous writer and sculptor.

Mehso-so

Mixed feelings about this one. Covering the 100 years of Rosa's life, from a Polish pogrom to a garden in Morningside in the early 2000s. Wonderfully Scottish (well, mostly Edinburgh), and with a message surely no one can argue with: conflict is bad.

For me, a bit too ambitious - and heavy on the historical exposition.

sarahbarnes I have this one on my list but am on the fence about it. 7d

'Things will get better now, won't they, Mummy?' says Jan. 'Now that we have a Labour government.'
Muriel smooths a sleeve with her left hand and plies the iron with her right. 'Yes, things will get better.'
'I like Mr Attlee. He has a nice face.'
'They'll have to work fast,' Bruce says. 'Five years isn't very long to make everything happen that they've promised.'

Did you get that at the back? A new Labour Government! Fancy that!

Pickpick

This was my last book from the #wpf25 longlist. I liked it but didn‘t love it - a fairly standard family saga for me.

It felt too long (nearly 14 hours on audio), with a lot of unnecessary detail and a tendency to over-dramatise, leading one to think something was about to happen. Eg, one of the characters is in Spain, reporting on the Civil War. He‘s in a cafe writing a letter home, when 3 people burst through the door making a lot of noise ⬇️

squirrelbrain ….and then they sit down and order coffee. 🤷‍♀️ Lots more examples like this. 1mo
BarbaraBB I really liked this one, just because of it being so straight forward. I guess I just needed that kind of book! 1mo
squirrelbrain Yes, I can see that @barbarabb - particularly with the rest of the longlist! 1mo

I very much enjoyed this #WP25 longlist book. It‘s a quiet story about Rosa‘s life. Born in Poland wheee she witnesses the pogrom in which her family is killed. She somehow arrives in Scotland where she is adopted and lives her life. She goes through all the stages a woman goes, she‘s happy and sad, with friends and family or lonely. And yet in the back of her mind there‘s always her family, brutally murdered.
