The Call of the Weird
The Call of the Weird: Encounters with Survivalists, Porn Stars, Alien Killers, and Ike Turner | Louis Theroux
7 posts | 10 read | 5 to read
No, it doesnOCOt get any weirder than this: Thor Templar, Lord Commander of the Earth Protectorate, who claims to have killed ten aliens. Or April, the Neo-Nazi bringing up her twin daughters Lamb and Lynx (A.K.A. Prussian Blue, a white-power folk group for kids) and her youngest daughter, Dresden. For a decade, Louis Theroux has been making acclaimed television programs about offbeat characters on the fringes of U.S. society. Now he revisits the people who have intrigued him the most to try to discover what motivates them-and why they hold their bizarre beliefs. Reflecting on these assorted dreamers, schemers, and outlaws, Theroux entertainingly and unforgettably creates ?a moving, funny, and frightening expos(r) of America and its often elusive dreamOCO ("NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC")."

Mehso-so

I've been the fan of Louis Theroux for the longest time and this didn't really tell me anything new. I already had seen how his interviewees had ended up because I saw his latest documentary series about them. But this book has a strong Loius Theroux kind of voice and it was interesting to get to read his thoughts about his work. I found out that he has a autobiography. I'm definitely going to read that!

Thanks to the many people on here who have systematically brainwashed me in to this with their photos over the last week - my first ever pumpkin spice latte.

It tastes like all three courses at once 😂 i'm still not sure if thats good or bad!

Reading the tagged book. Nothing new but may interest people who enjoy his tv work. The book has a slightly different feel, revealing a little more of his own personal insecurities.

wanderinglynn I love PSL! Even better with a pumpkin bagel with pumpkin spice cream cheese. 🧡🎃😂 5y

Brilliant book! Loved the TV series and any documentary Mr Theroux does so finding this book for 20p in a charity shop was a bonus. Lots of short stories about different characters he has met over the years so both a recap and new material.

I've loved Louis for a long time - and am so happy I got to see him live tonight. It was a lot of fun hearing his recollections and reviews of the many encounters he's had with "weird" subcultures and controversial figures. While some elements of the show felt a little rehearsed, some conclusions a little forced, it was admirably underpinned by a strong sense of curiosity, compassion and a desire to understand others.

Fridayfilms Love Louis! Saw him at the Royal Festival Hall for a screening of My Scientology Movie, which was excellent, and so different from his other docs. 8y
