I picked up this copy of The Rules of Magic, the prequel to Practical Magic, for a bargain price a few weeks ago! What are your thoughts on prequels? Do you prefer to read books in the order they're published or according to the timeline of the stories? In other words, should I read this before or after Practical Magic? 💛💛

I just started this eerie read by Samantha Schweblin & translated by Megan McDowell. It's my second non-English language book in a row (I finished The Vegetarian last night) & I've been thinking about the challenges of translating fiction, particularly the difficulty of choosing between literal translation & a more creative translation that attempts to capture the tone & spirit of the original.

Are there any translations you strongly recommend?

I found this a quick, entertaining read with dark humour and interesting insights. Braithwaite writes in short, clear bursts that make this book very easy to consume, encouraging the reader to continue through some minor issues with pace and drops in tension. I‘m excited to read more from this promising author. (Read my full review on IG.)

This was such a compelling read! I don‘t know how I‘m going handle waiting until next year to read the second instalment.

I only started listening to this yesterday afternoon but can already tell I‘m going to devour it. Having Patricia Lockwood read it in her wry, dry tone is excellent.

I‘ve been wanting to read this since finishing Guinn‘s Jim Jones book. Today seems like a good time to start, in light of Manson‘s passing a few hours ago. I very much doubt anyone will miss him. (On a related note: definitely listen to the You Must Remember This podcast series on Manson and Hollywood. Karina Longworth is amazing.)

New book for a lazy Sunday ❤❤

Such a good haul from my local op shop on Friday! I started Station Eleven that afternoon at the pub and it's really got me hooked! I've been wanting to read it for ages. (Slightly off topic: my ill housemate was super pleased with the hilarious Bachelors record I got for $2!)

I've loved Louis for a long time - and am so happy I got to see him live tonight. It was a lot of fun hearing his recollections and reviews of the many encounters he's had with "weird" subcultures and controversial figures. While some elements of the show felt a little rehearsed, some conclusions a little forced, it was admirably underpinned by a strong sense of curiosity, compassion and a desire to understand others.

Hoping for a weekend of sun and fun, gold skirts and glorious reading times. Loving this read so far.

I inadvertently took a break from this book but it's been so easy to pick back up! Spending my Sunday afternoon reacquainting myself with these characters, sitting in my sun room and relaxing after partying hard with local drag queens last night.

Van Badham is amazing. Last night's Q&A + finding out she adapted "The Bloody Chamber" make me a bigger fan than ever. #myovariesmademe

These Donna Parker Mystery books (look! Up there! Between the horse heads!) used to belong to my mum. Most of them, anyway. They're so much fun, by golly jeepers! And Donna Parker in Hollywood (the one all pretty in pink) was always my favourite.

I've been checking my local stores for this for weeks and it's finally in!! So keen. This work day is going to draaaaag.

I really enjoyed In the Woods and (despite the unbelievable premise) am enjoying the first pages of the sequel so far too! I do love murder mysteries, especially quiet, mood-building ones like Tana French's.

Catton's reflections (or her characters' reflections) on the language young people use to describe and think about sex are incredibly familiar. *IT*. *All the way*. The lack of understanding, of feeling left out of some secret.

Almost at the end! So interesting seeing all the strands come together.

Having a cosy night in with this one - my first from Eleanor Catton. An interesting read so far!

The tension just builds, and builds, and builds... (And this book looks so cute next to the pictures I just got secondhand - $6! - for my sister's new house.)

Deadlines have meant less reading time BUT still loving this. And beer. And cold but sunny days.
