Absolutely GORGEOUS!!! 😍 I LOVED it. 💖 Would not be surprised if it was my favourite graphic novel of the year.
The art: the style range, the colours, switching from more moody and sedate to lovely neon, the playing with panel layout, the intricacies and then the pause for a big splashy moment, UGH, SO GOOD. 1/?
Which is not to take away from Mariko Tamaki's storytelling, this is definitely a fresh take on Zatanna's orgins, because the tissue-paper-thin set up this character got in Batman: The Animated Series and the in media res vibes of Justice League:Dark the animated film (basically the only other places I know her from) certainly posited a different relationship to her father 2w
This is such a strong narrative, playing on some of the old classics, complicated relationship with parental figure, individual recognized for gifts they've been denying/didn't realize they had, coming into one's own as an adult, recognizing/choosing how you want to live your life, a version that might be more responsibility than you anticipated, but also truer to yourself. The price of magic, of any power when 2w
