The Art of Murder
The Art of Murder | Maggie Giles
1 post | 1 read | 1 to read
For fans of Riley Sager and Shari Lapena, a dark and twisty small-town thriller that challenges loyalty and uncovers deadly secrets hidden in plain sight. In the tranquil town of Cedar Plains, where safety and community are sacred, Courtney Faiths ideal life is upended by a body found on a local farm, shattering her peaceful existence. Her friend, Alexa Huston, intimately familiar with chaos, gets entangled in an accidental murder that escalates her spiraling life into deeper darkness. Alexa wrestles with a disturbing question: Is murder justifiable if it targets the deserving? As bodies accumulate, the local police scramble for answers. Torn between loyalty and justice, Courtney discovers evidence linking Alexa to the crimes. Their friendship frays as Courtney grapples with a dire choice: expose Alexa and risk her own darkest secret, or protect a friend and possibly destroy everything she cherishes. In Cedar Plains, some truths are too perilous to unearth. Caught in a deadly dance of secrets and lies, Courtney must decide whether to confront the monster behind a familiar face or let their secrets stay hidden, buried within the towns heart. Their darkest deeds are cloaked in silence, and no one truly knows anything.

Pickpick

I feel like I‘m gravitating toward some seriously dark books in 2025—maybe my coping mechanism for the dumpster fire that is life right now?!?

This is dark and at times graphic. Dual perspectives power the reader through the book; one is the serial killer, and the other is her best friend. I also have to wonder why I felt the serial killer was more likable than the BF (if I had someone who constantly asked me if I was okay and wouldn‘t stop…

Librarybelle …peppering me with questions until I satisfied their curiosity clothed as empathy, I‘d probably have dark thoughts too). Cedar Plains, the setting, is a small town with a lot of darkness and a whole lot of secrets and coverups. The reader learns a lot of the hushed up crimes in the past that led to the current crime spree. This is a light pick; I agree with other reviewers on the stilted dialogue, though that could be my annoyance with the BFF. ⬇️ 3mo
Librarybelle ⬆️ The audio was a good listen, but especially for the graphic drug, violence and sex, it‘s probably good I listened to this at home. 😂 3mo
Suet624 Dark times call for dark books perhaps? 3mo

Librarybelle @TheBookHippie Ha! I do have some addresses in a list I kept separate, but I also have no clue who was and wasn‘t still participating. Thanks! 2mo
