I, Medusa
I, Medusa: A new kind of villain origin story | Ayana Gray
3 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
From New York Times bestselling author Ayana Gray comes a new kind of villain origin story, reimagining one of the most iconic monsters in Greek mythology as a provocative and powerful young heroine. Meddy has spent her whole life as a footnote in someone else's story. Out of place next to her beautiful, immortal sisters and her parents-both gods, albeit minor ones-she dreams of leaving her family's island for a life of adventure. So when she catches the eye of the goddess Athena, who invites her to train as an esteemed priestess in her temple, Meddy leaps at the chance to see the world beyond her home. In Athens' colourful market streets and the clandestine chambers of the temple, Meddy flourishes in her role as Athena's favoured acolyte, getting her first tastes of purpose and power. But when she is noticed by another Olympian, Poseidon, a drunken night between girl and god ends in violence, and the course of Meddy's promising future is suddenly and irrevocably altered. Her locs transformed into snakes as punishment for a crime she did not commit, Medusa must embrace a new identity-not as a victim, but as a vigilante-and with it, the chance to write her own story as mortal, martyr, and myth. Exploding with rage, heartbreak, and love, I, Medusa portrays a young woman caught in the cross currents between her heart's deepest desires and the cruel, careless games the Olympian gods play.

Medusa has had many roles in many stories. Daughter, sister, mortal, priestess, victim, monster. Here‘s a story that incorporates many aspects of her past to make something new.

A fascinating retelling of Medusa. This Medusa is much younger than other retellings, & that influences a lot. Medusa‘s characterization is deep, but everyone else‘s is shallow. The pacing kept me tense the whole time, & the ending left me feeling a bit sad.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

I have this audiobook as an ALC from Libro.fm and the publisher. I‘ve been itching to read it for months now. I straight up don‘t know if I‘m going to finish it. It‘s a coming of age story. When I say that the second hand fear and embarrassment for the protagonist is strong, friends it‘s powerful. I‘m practically crawling out of my skin. I‘m taking a break from this.
