(Day 8 - #GimmeShelter)

*Written in 1969, the Rolling Stones‘ song was illustrative of the uprisings around the world that saw huge protests in 1968. There was something pretty powerful going on in 1968, and it‘s worth reading about—movements in Chicago, London, Belfast, Paris and Rome; Prague, Warsaw and Helsinki; Brazil and Mexico City. Even Moscow saw a protest of eight students, who were quickly beaten and arrested.

Cinfhen Sometimes I really appreciate a political song ~ this is one of those times ❣️🙌🏻 5y

An engaging and comprehensive history, but the sheer scope necessitates a sacrifice of nuance. For instance, Kurlansky‘s account of the Clean-Ins suggests uncomplicated cooperation between the Diggers and the Yippies, when most Digger literature—including Emmett Grogan‘s autobiography—attest that this was not the case at all. A minor oversight, but nonetheless misleading and makes me wonder what else may have slipped through the cracks. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

There has never been a year like 1968, and it is unlikely that there will ever be one again. At a time when nations and cultures were still separate and very different–and in 1968 Poland, France, the United States, and Mexico were far more different from one another than they are today–there occurred a spontaneous combustion of rebellious spirits around the world.

Quoting the Bard right off the bat is exactly how to win me over.

Came home to the second half of my Better World Books order! Where is 1968 you ask? So did I--they sent me a cozy mystery instead. Why does everything have to turn into a thing? More crap to deal with....
