Partial Eclipse
Partial Eclipse: A Novel | Lesley Glaister
2 posts | 1 read | 7 to read
Award-winning author Lesley Glaister explores the lives of two women from different centuries, imprisoned for crimes of passion and love Jennifer is in solitary confinement. A place where there is only memory, imagination, and me. She isnt the first in her family to be convicted of a crime. Centuries earlier, one of her ancestors, the unmarried Peggy Maybee, was arrested for trying to steal a peacock so she could give its beautiful feathers to her infant son, Samuel. Peggy was tried, convicted, and deported to Botany Bay to serve her sentence. She was heartbroken at being separated from her child but awed by the savage beauty of eighteenth-century Australia. As Jennifer and Peggys parallel lives unfold, long-held secrets are revealed, including the truth about the crime that ultimately landed Jennifer in prison. Alternating between the two womens points of view, Partial Eclipse is about love: illicit love, maternal love, and self-love. Its also a novel about freedom and never losing hope.

Has anyone read this? Im about halfway through and am blown away by the brutal story and the exquisite writing. The story is two-fold: a woman prisoner in solitary confinement reminiscing about a long ago love affair (and the reason for her lock up?) and also the story of her ancestor, sentenced and shipped away on a prison ship for stealing a feather. So far, an AMAZING story.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @bookishmarginalia She tried to steal a peacock feather for her infant son and was accused of stealing the peacock and shipped off. Really gruesome conditions. But a cool story! 8y
