Blessed Child
Blessed Child | Ted Dekker, Bill Bright
3 posts | 10 read | 2 to read
The young orphaned boy was abandoned and raised in an Ethiopian monastery. He has never seen outside its walls -- at least, not the way most people see. Now he must flee those walls or die. But the world is hardly ready for a boy like Caleb. When relief expert Jason Marker agrees to take Caleb from the monastery, he unwittingly opens humanity's doors to an incredible journey filled with intrigue and peril. Together with Leiah, the French Canadian nurse who escapes to America with them, Jason discovers Caleb's stunning power. But so do the boy's enemies, who will stop at nothing to destroy him. Jason and Leiah fight for the boy's survival while the world erupts into debate over the source of the boy's power. In the end nothing can prepare them for what they will find.

Mehso-so

Sigh. Writing like this is why I don't read "Christian fiction." The first half or so was okay, if a bit predictable. Then the spiritual experiences ramped up & I couldn't stop rolling my eyes. I hail from a non-Charismatic tradition, and don't feel at home with demonstrative worship, so that's part of it. But it felt preachy & repetitive when it should have been rich & compelling. At least the topics should make for good book group discussion!

BarbaraJean For actual compelling descriptions of miraculous spiritual experience, I'd recommend reading Leif Enger's Peace Like a River instead. 8y
PatriciaU I second the rec for Peace Like a River, one of my all-time favorite books. 8y
slhbooks One of my favorites too. I remember reading it very slowly so I could savor every minute. @PatriciaU @BarbaraJean 8y

Starting this one tonight for an upcoming book club meeting. It's someone else's pick, and I'm a little skeptical... and the cover kind of creeps me out. But here goes!

britt_brooke That's the good and the bad about book clubs. Reading things you wouldn't normally and loving them or suffering through something you completely not interested in. I haven't read my club's September book yet .... thanks for the reminder! 😄 8y
BarbaraJean @britt_brooke Yep! We've had some good picks overall this month, but there's that one group member whose choices are consistently well-meant, but really poorly written. Ah, well. 8y
