Spandau Phoenix: A Novel | Greg Iles

One of Iles earlier books. You can see his emerging power and talent as an author not yet fully developed. An international conspiracy thriller involving a secret from WWII, Germany and South Africa. Strong characters, a fast moving plot and plenty of twists make this one a winner. I read this after his masterful Natchez Burning trilogy and it was fun to see the raw materials of his later brilliance. Not life changing but enjoyable.

LaLecture Hahaha Spandau is actually the part of Berlin I used to live in. So weird seeing this name used in a book title as most Germans don‘t even know it exists, let alone foreigners ^^. So is the Natchez trilogy worth continuing? I had some troubles with the first book. Mainly because I hated all the racist guys :D. 6y

RJHowe @LaLecture I think the Natchez trilogy is great. I think you are supposed to hate the racist guys! Spandau prison had more than a little historical importance. I think they eventually tore it down. 6y

LaLecture @RJHowe Yeah of course you are supposed to hate the racists :D but I can‘t stand when the bad guys don‘t get what they deserve in the end. The ending of book 1 was rather sad and frustrating. That‘s interesting to hear. As someone who talked about WWII A LOT in school and lived nearby I can tell you we never ever talked about this prison. Fascinating to see how different the historical focus can be. 6y

LaLecture So I did some Wikipedia research and realised I had heard about this prison, just not in school. But my family still remembers it standing. But yes, it was torn down a long time ago. 6y

RJHowe @LaLecture I suspect it may also be a generational thing. I was studying WWII history when Hess was still alive. I found the end of book three in the trilogy very satisfying. About as much as I can say without giving spoilers. 6y

I hope it‘s okay to get started on the Reading Harder challenge #readharder. This author is great but I have an issue with anymore about Nazis. Over 600 pages so it‘s a lot of book for this unsettling cover.

This is my favorite Greg Iles book. I read it so long ago that I feel like I need to reread it. I noticed that many people are reading him on here and if you haven't tried this one give it a shot it's excellent. Also Black Cross from him too, the books are related.
