Dear Data
Dear Data | Giorgia Lupi, Stefanie Posavec
11 posts | 5 read | 2 reading | 9 to read
Equal parts mail art, data visualization, and affectionate correspondence, Dear Data celebrates "the infinitesimal, incomplete, imperfect, yet exquisitely human details of life," in the words of Maria Popova (Brain Pickings), who introduces this charming and graphically powerful book. For one year, Giorgia Lupi, an Italian living in New York, and Stefanie Posavec, an American in London, mapped the particulars of their daily lives as a series of hand-drawn postcards they exchanged via mail weeklysmall portraits as full of emotion as they are data, both mundane and magical. Dear Data reproduces in pinpoint detail the full year's set of cards, front and back, providing a remarkable portrait of two artists connected by their attention to the details of their livesincluding complaints, distractions, phone addictions, physical contact, and desires. These details illuminate the lives of two remarkable young women and also inspire us to map our own lives, including specific suggestions on what data to draw and how. A captivating and unique book for designers, artists, correspondents, friends, and lovers everywhere.

I'm joining @Andrew65 in #12Booksof2021, sharing the remaining months all at once! Dear Data had some tough competition in July, but ultimately won favorite. This data art collection reflecting on a year in the lives of two women is beautiful and so interesting to look at. I was also delighted that one of the women comes from the county I live in. #Nonfiction #2021WrapUp

I loved reading this collection of #Dataviz postcards sent between Giorgia and Stephanie. Each card visually represented elements of their daily lives, from the number of sounds heard in the first minute of every hour to the books on their shelves. I loved reading their postcards and seeing the different forms that their self-reflections took throughout the book. I recommend reading the physical book. I had a rough time trying to read the ebook.

JudeCC Sounds intriguing! Thanks for sharing! Will add to TBR 3y

Time for dataviz about their books! 😍 I'm loving this whole project. How would you represent your book collection in data visualization? #DataViz

Data is so neat. I love that they're taking a look at the stories that data tells.

My cat demanded to go outside, so I set up a table and some shade to read at while she explores. #PetsOfLitsy #Cat #ReadingBuddy #ReadOutside

I tried to read a digital copy of this book a month or two ago, but it was just too hard to read. The postcards and data were way too small to read, and I couldn't zoom in in that format. This is an oversized book, so I've finally just picked it up from my local library!

Dear Data is so beautifully drawn and organized, I loved combing through the visual information collected between two friends in two countries, over one year. The ways in which we present and collect information is so much more interesting when it‘s so pleasing to the eye 😉

#nonfiction #design

Part performance art, part information and data visualization science, part sketchbook, part deeply personal experiment - mistakes, ugly drawings, watts and all. And all parts friendship and curiosity. Must have for graphic designers

Loved loved loved this book! It's performative art that I reacted to in so many ways. I could see this image on someone's wall, but there's so many layers of meaning. It inspires a better understanding of ourselves and friends. A protest against big data. It resonates with me deciding how to structure metadata. And it's beautiful! Thank you to the authors for sharing yourselves and personal details.
