The Hollow City
The Hollow City | Dan Wells
5 posts | 7 read | 9 to read
Dan Wells won instant acclaim for his three-novel debut about the adventures of John Wayne Cleaver, a heroic young man who is a potential serial killer. All who read the trilogy were struck by the distinctive and believable voice Wells created for John. Now he returns with another innovative thriller told in a very different, equally unique voice. A voice that comes to us from the realm of madness.Michael Shipman is paranoid schizophrenic; he suffers from hallucinations, delusions, and complex fantasies of persecution and horror. That's bad enough. But what can he do if some of the monsters he sees turn out to be real? Who can you trust if you can't even trust yourself? The Hollow City is a mesmerizing journey into madness, where the greatest enemy of all is your own mind.

❐ Overall Rating 2¾⭐ | Narration 😀 = Good
❐ Psychological Thriller
❐ Inside the head of a Schizophrenic
❐ Weird AF

I think listening to this made me feel a little crazy. Overall, I think the craziness just got to be too much for me to follow what was actually going on. The ending went into some out-there kind of crazy...but hey, it was unpredictable.

The protagonist has schizophrenia, or at least the doctors tell him he does. Just when you think you know what‘s real and what isn‘t, you meet the children of the earth. Are they just a cult or something more?

"Cell phones and computers and TV."

Well. That doesn't sound fun at all.

Part of me is going "What the fuck just happened?" And another part of me is going "Holy hell, that was amazing!" This book reaches into the mind of a man who may or may not have schizophrenia. I learned about his hallucinations, treatments, and (almost literally) falling down the rabbit hole. First book by Dan Wells; will not be my last.

I felt like I had to take advantage of the fire and grabbed one from the shelves. I loved this book. I bought this for a dollar at a secondhand shop and had no idea what to expect. It was compelling and confusing (and a pretty weird ending.) I kept second guessing everything I thought with this one.

MrBook Nice pic! 😊👍🏻 7y
