The Magic Mountain | Thomas Mann

Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Confusing and frustrating? Sometimes. Thought provoking and magnificent? Always!! This is a fabulous book that is well worth your reading time. It took me six weeks to get through it, and now I will go back and try to make sense of my notes. This is a book that one could read multiple times and get something different out of it each time. @Lcsmcat Thanks for reading with me!! #2020classics

SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat That it was!!! 5y

Moby-Dick | Herman Melville

My slightly over-the-top August TBR. 🙈🙈🙈📚 Good news is that The Goldfinch and Moby-Dick are both read alongs that are more than one month in length. Bad news is that I still have 300 pages to go in The Magic Mountain 😬. I will finish it!

mcipher The Goldfinch! So so so good. 5y
HardcoverHearts I‘m delighted at how effective buddy reads and read alongs are for getting to the really weighty and intimidating works that I‘ve always wanted to get to but was nervous. 😬 5y
SharonGoforth @mcipher I can‘t wait to read it! 5y

MelissaSue81 Those are some LOOOOOONG books!
5y
SharonGoforth @HardcoverHearts Yes! My problem is there are so many that I want to do, and I seem to be incapable of picking and choosing! 5y
SharonGoforth @MelissaSue81 The page count is insane!! 5y
Leftcoastzen I‘m almost always in the same boat, I end up with too many #chunksters all at once. 5y
SharonGoforth @Leftcoastzen Exactly!! ⛵️ 5y
Lcsmcat Great TBR! I‘ve loved a lot of those. And you‘ll find The Magic Mountain speeds up as you near the end. Those last pages speed by! 5y
SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat Thanks! I‘m still in the middle of Naphta and Settembrini, and it‘s a little confusing trying to keep their philosophies straight. I really like the way Mann presents both points of view, though, and then bounces them off Hans Castorp as a sort of sounding board. 5y
Lcsmcat @SharonGoforth Their arguments do get eye crossing! Naphta in particular annoyed me, but things get really crazy between those two near the end. I think a clear idea of their philosophies is less important than the reaction of Hans, who bounces from idea to idea depending on who is influencing him at any given moment. 5y
SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat Lol, like a game of ping pong 🏓! 5y
Lcsmcat @SharonGoforth Or pinball! 5y
charl08 Good luck! 5y
DivineDiana Do you know who is doing #thegoldfinchreadalong? 5y
SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat Brona - she‘s @brona68 on Instagram and @bronasbooks on Twitter. The Twitter hashtag is #MobyDickReadalong. Hope you‘ll join in!!! 5y
Lcsmcat I think you meant to tag @DivineDiana on this one. I‘m 50 pages from finishing An American Tragedy, and after that I‘m going to read a few thinner books before my next chunkster! 5y
SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat @DivineDiana You‘re right!! I‘m so sorry!! 5y
Lcsmcat @SharonGoforth No apology needed. I read Moby Dick years ago, and while good literature is always worth rereading I‘m not ready this time for the 🐳. 5y

Faust I & II | Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

Faust is my #2020classics selection for June, and I‘m really enjoying it! Is it wrong for me to think Mephistopheles has the best part in the book? He‘s by far the most interesting and entertaining character! #currentlyreading
