Rivers of London | Ben Aaronovitch

The book lost a quarter of a star because the writing is clunky in places, but I loved it and will be continuing the series. I especially liked the historical and pop culture references.

I should have waited for the shortlist and hibernated this book. I'd be very surprised if it makes it, as I really struggled with it and could have bailed on it if it hadn't made it.

Librarybelle Oh dear! I had recently splurged and picked up a copy on the strength of a virtual author talk I saw her do. 4w
jenniferw88 @Librarybelle, you may like it! I just know very little about this period, and it was very heavy going. Shorter chapters may have helped. 4w
RamsFan1963 I wanted to read this, but I've seen a lot of negative reviews. If you want to know more about Henry IV, I'd recommend reading Dan Jones's Henry V. It covers the end of Richard II reign, Henry IV seizing the throne, and leads on into Henry V reign as king. 4w
youneverarrived Hmm, good to know. It does look heavy going and it‘s more of a chunkster than I realised. Think I‘ll concentrate on the others before this. 4w

If you go into this book expecting a murder mystery, you'll be disappointed, but as a contemporary look at Japan's expectations of women, it's quite good.

BarbaraBB Agree 💯 I enjoyed the Japanese atmosphere 1mo
CarolynM I‘ve just finished this too. The information about women in Japan was the best of it. 1mo

This was very interesting, but it will make you angry at some of the ways victims and their families have been treated by the UK justice system. It's very up-to-date as well. For example, Wayne Couzens is mentioned. Next post will be triggers, as there are quite a few.

Would work for #52bookclub25 #redheadedcharacter as well, but I ⬇️

jenniferw88 want my character to have a more active role in the story, so I'm not using it for this prompt. 1mo
julesG The book is non-fiction. Why would you use a non-fiction for the red-head prompt? 1mo
jenniferw88 @julesG There's 2 real-life people mentioned in it with red hair! It's a very weak stretch, but if you were worried about the prompt, then you could possibly count it. (I'm hoping to use Demon Copperhead for that one though) 1mo

julesG I'm not worried. I completed the prompt already (with 3 backup books). 1mo
jenniferw88 @julesG 👍😀 1mo
