Really liked this murder mystery. A family‘s past comes to a murderous conclusion after one son gets released from prison….the other son put him there. Written in a refreshing murderous way!

Det. Aaron Falk returns to his small hometown in Australia to attend the funerals of his childhood friend, Luke, and Luke‘s wife and young son. It‘s thought that Luke killed his family and then himself. The town is experiencing a 2-year drought, putting everyone on edge. Falk teams up with the local detective to find out what really happened, and in the process, dregs up another murder case from 20 years ago - one that drove Falk out of town. 👇🏻
@wideeyedreader picked this one for our mother-daughter murder mystery book club this month. I loved it. It was just as good, if not better, than the first and as always with these things I was surprised by the ending. I would not make a good detective 😂😂
I really enjoyed this compelling dual timeline novel. Two courageous, trailblazing Australian women living 50 years apart, lead unconventional lives that connect them over 50 years time.In 1868 Theo,a lover of gardens & its creatures, makes an amazing discovery of a new species of butterfly, never before seen in Australia.50 years later,Verity while researching baby farms for a newspaper article, stumbles upon some of her own mysterious family 🔽

I listened to this one which I think is the way to go. There was much to like - in fact, stories of her mother were some of the funniest things about her book - but I thought the book was overly long.
I enjoy the way that this story of generational trauma unfolds, even though it's frustrating at times how obtuse the characters can be. They're realistic but maddening in the way that they jump to conclusions and make assumptions and keep secrets that are better revealed. I'm glad to know that "Outback teacher" is a possible career path (although not keen on 45C temps).

The tulips we picked a week ago are still flourishing.
Although it is a damp gray early morning, I am bundled up in the porch glider. When I opened the porch door and heard the call of a mourning dove I JUST HAD to be out here for a little while. Sounds of a bird chorus are filling my ears.
I am really enjoying this historical novel; it was a free one from Kindle. #readyourkindle #birdsong #porchlife
My expectations were high. I thought I'd be snort-laughing at the wit while also being blown away by how intricate the mystery was. None of that happened. It doesn't make this a bad book; more that as @BarbaraJean notes this type of book works when the tone of the narrator is something that gels with you, & for a good part of the novel Ernest (the narrator) annoyed me. But it all perks up quite nicely towards the end, so it's a 3-star pick!
