Vaccines: A Graphic History | Paige V. Polinsky
post image
Mehso-so

This is shorter than I thought and I'm not sure what age group it's aimed at. It uses some fairly technical terms (like “live attenuated vaccine“) but simplifies things a lot. I probably wouldn't super recommend it because it's kinda... neither one thing nor the other. The info isn't wrong as far as it goes, but it doesn't explain things in much depth, despite using quite technical terms.

And that's a blackout! #ComicsBingo

I'm not actually sure how I feel about this one, because it kinda depends where the story goes. Jigeon seems like he might kinda be creepy, but... yeah. I guess I'll probably keep reading and see where it goes!

willaful I need the superhero square, gonna see if I can find Quince. 2w
shanaqui @willaful The library's Comics Plus subscription let me filter their catalogue for superheroes, so I could probably find some more examples if you need! 2w
willaful @shanaqui That would be helpful! 2w

shanaqui @willaful Okay, none of these are recommendations from me, just what I found in that category that wasn't Marvel/DC:

- Invincible: Family Matters (Robert Kirkman & Corey Walker)
- Wildcats (Crystal Valasquez & Eva Cabrera)
- Jumpscare (Cullen Bunn & Danny Luckert)
- The Super Sisters (Christophe Cazenove & William Maury)
- Catalyst Prime: Summit (Amy Chu & Jan Duursema)
- Catalyst Prime: Noble (Brandon Thomas & Jamal Igle + more)

shanaqui There's... a lot more, it looks like, so maybe I'll try some more of them and let you know how I like them! 2w
willaful @shanaqui thanks! 2w

This was a bit random and scattered, and I really didn't like that the cannon-fodder didn't have faces at all, just numbers or letters. Just weird.

Interesting mix of Carmilla + Chinese folklore that left me wishing for a bit more detail on how the two connect. It seems weird to call it Carmilla when she apparently dies in the first book, so I wonder how final that was, but... I'm not sure I'll keep reading.

shanaqui If anyone's interested in joining in with #ComicsBingo, here's a link to my first post about it: https://www.litsy.com/web/post/2911726

And if anyone's looking for a suitable comic for #HauntedShelf, this'd work! It's a fun combo of classic lit and folklore, and perfect for the spooky season.

DPS Only! | Velinxi

Ahhh, I actually like that this didn't go the most obvious way at the end.

Also, loved that throughout, the siblings are so close and care about each other a lot, even though they don't agree and sometimes talk past each other.

I like the art and character designs, too, but I expected to given Velinxi's work on The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System in English!

DPS Only! | Velinxi

Velinxi was the artist who illustrated The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System in English (you might remember me posting my favourites with each chapter I read when I did a reread recently), so I was veeery surprised and keen when I spotted this on Comics Plus! Thank you, library, once more. 🙏

And it'll fill a #ComicsBingo square!

This filled soooo many prompts for different stuff, ahaha. Also I'd say if you're looking for a spooky graphic novel quick read for #HauntedShelf or the #GottaCatchEmAllSpooky, I'd recommend this. It's a bit gory, a bit creepy, the ideas are pretty neat, and I like the art. I'm interested enough to see where the story goes; I'll read the next volume.

I love the colours, though the art didn't quite work for me (something kinda uncanny valley).

Actually, the bit I loved most was the background stuff: each chapter has a bit of information about the real-world stuff the story is based on, and the back has a whole description of the timeline of the world which sounds fascinating. The story itself was unsurprising.

Probably not a series I'll finish, but it was fun to give it a shot.

I'm not entirely sure what I just read or what I think of it yet, but the artist was clearly having an absolute blast and loving drawing two trans male MCs having sex and hijinks.

Faranae I'm so glad you liked(?) this high octane single-braincell comic ❤ 4w
